Moving a site to Word Press
-
Decades ago, I created a website typing out all the HTML code. The host is now raising the price astronomically, and I want to move it to WordPress, personal. I have the images and the html documents. Would I be able to reproduce it just as it is in WordPress, or would I have to use one of their designs? Thank you

Hi there!
On WordPress.com the idea is to allow people to create their site without the need to use code so I’m afraid you won’t be able to just move the HTML files here.
You’ll want to use one of our themes and set them up to your liking:
https://wordpress.com/themes/As for importing your content, have a look at this page:
Let me know if you have any more questions regarding that.

Thanks for the kind and quick reply.
I built the site for an elderly artist who was very exacting about the look and wants it to look the same.

Ah, I see, then I guess it will be complicated to convince them to change the design :)
I think WordPress.org may be a better option for you. Have a look at this page, it has instructions on how you could convert an HTML page to WordPress. To be able to use a plugin or custom theme, here on WordPress.com, you’d need plan Business.
If you decided to go with the WordPress.org, you can see here our recommended hosts for the open-source version of WordPress:

This is great information. Thanks so much! I can see that no matter what I do this will take some learning and probably require some help. The page you linked to is very clear. I will see what I can do.

Hi there,
I just want to suggest another alternative, because moving to WordPress, whether it’s with us or the open source version at another host, it won’t be easy converting the existing design into a WordPress theme, and you’d need to migrate all content manually.
As another option, take a look at Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Domains, and GitHub Pages – they’re all cloud-hosting services that are very reasonably priced, where you might be able to host your existing HTML site without needing to manually convert everything to WordPress.

Thanks very much. You’re right — I began trying to re-create the design and it was painstakingly, difficult. I didn’t get very far.
The site is currently hosted by Earthlink, which will bring the site down at the end of March. AWS seems like a good option — the “Simple Static Website Hosting”/Amazon S3 option?
I greatly appreciate these suggestions.

Kokieh, I want to thank you again for the suggestion. I did sign up with AWS and was able to easily move the website there by uploading my images and HTML docs, and so far very inexpensive. You saved me a lot of agonizing and work. Much appreciated.

Sorry, I didn’t see your reply from the 27th.
Happy to hear you found an option that works for you. Thanks for letting me know :)
