Moving archives and categories
-
I don’t know if I’m asking this in the right place, but I just transferred my WP.com blog to WP.org, hosted by BlueHost. Is there a file here somewhere that contains my archives, categories and blogroll info for easy export, or will I need to rebuild it from scratch?
-
yes, wank’s response there is the correct one.
steps:
in your wordpress.com dashboard, go to Manage > Export.
download that *.WXR file to your desktop.
after you install wordpress (see instructions on wordpress.org),
go download the wordpress migration tool
and add the wordpress.php file to wp-admin/import
in your regular blog, go to Import and click on wordpress.
browse to the *.WXR file on your desktop, and import! -
Thanks, Sunburntka, I did that and got all my posts and comments moved over. I was looking for a way to specifically move my categories, archives and blogroll. I know they’re in a file somewhere, I just don’t know where. I’ll ask over at the WP.org forums.

categories are supposed to be included in the wxr file. if they’re not, it’s a bug.
your blogroll is in a file,
http://table4five.wordpress.com/wp-links-opml.phpsave that as an opml file, and go to Links > Import Links, and upload that file to your hosted blog.

The categories should actually be contained with the Posts which are surrounded by ‘item’ tags. They aren’t listed seperately.
