Moving blog & domain name to WordPress.com

I am trying to help a nonprofit move a wordpress.org blog, which is too complicated and too expensive for them, to WordPress.com. Both the hosting and the domain name are up for renewal in early December.
What I want to know is (1) is it possible to set up the blog now as domainname.wordpress.com, leaving it private so I could begin training someone in how to use it and (2) then pay the domain registration fee to wordpress.com in December before making the blog public under the domain name again?
I’m not sure the organization wants to put in the effort to make a blog work…they’re posting only once every 2 or 3 months. But I have to figure out what their options are.

You can set up a free WordPress.com site now and make it private so it is not publicly visible even to search engines. (option 3 in this article)
http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/It won’t matter what the actual url is when you set that up because it will be private while you work on it.
When you are ready to “go public” you can use domain mapping (a paid upgrade) to have a custom name for the new site. It’s still hosted here for free so all the TOS for wp.COM apply, but your readers will see the custom name.
You can use WordPress.com as a standard sort of site with only static pages if you like. There is no requirement to have a blog. This article should get you started on that:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/If the original site was using WordPress.ORG then you may be able to export the contents to WordPress.COM. But keep in mind that themes available here on wp.com are adapted to our platform so any CSS and other changes won’t transfer.
