Moving blog from wordpress.org to wordpress.com

    Hello there!

A few months ago, I canceled my hosting for my wordpress.org website and blog. I naively did not realize I would lose complete access to my wordpress admin with this choice. I would very much like to still have access to the many blog posts I had written. The only backup file I have is a sql.gz file, and to upload my backup wordpress.com requires a wxr file – which I am unable to access without access to my wordpress.org admin panel. I also am unable to find a converter to do this for me.

On this former thread, found here: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/trouble-importing-backup/?replies=16, a helpful woman helped someone with this same problem, uploading her file manually. Is there someone that can pretty please help me do the same thing? I understand I may lose media and page information. I am okay with this, as long as I can access my blog posts.

    Thank you so much!!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi –

The only way I can import the file to WordPress.com is with a .xml file. What was the site url?

Hi! Thank you so much for your reply! The original site url was falanstorm.com.

    Thank you for your help!!

Hi @fs758934554, since that site is no longer live and the files all long gone, things get a bit complicated.

What you would need to do would be to use WAMP to install WordPress locally on your Windows computer, then create the database and import your sql file into it via phpmyadmin.

Then you can install WordPress locally and go through the setup. It will likely ask to perform a database update during the process, but that should be all taken care of by the WordPress software, as long as the version of WordPress you were on isn’t too old.

Do note that the sql.gz file will not include any images or documents that you may have uploaded to the Media Library as those would be stored separate from the database.

If you had used a lot of images in your site, then this could turn into quite a bit of work uploading the images again and then editing the posts and pages to clean up the content and add the images back in. I would wait until after you have done the above and imported the content here before doing any editing or uploading of images.

If this is not something you wish to tackle, you may want to post to https://jobs.wordpress.net/ and see if someone is willing to do it for you and how much it would cost.
