Moving blog to new site

I’m setting up a whole new website with wordpress.org consolidating a website from Jimdo and two wordpress.com blogs. I’m having trouble with importing on the new site. I get server error 500 timeout, we’ve set the timeout on this end quite high at 3000 and it still times out after a couple of minutes.
The site is not particularly large. The export works fine.
Why am I having trouble importing my content?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @zz22aa, hmm, that is a really high timeout. And a 500 error doesn’t sound like a timeout message, either, so much as a server error. You might dig into that with your new host. If you need more help with the WordPress DIY software itself, you’ll want to use the forums here:

One thing I’ve noticed with importing to .org — if you run the importer again, it should skip past any posts that made it through already. So even if the importing server isn’t handling it well, you should have a full import after a few attempts. I’d compare your posts screens on the old and new site, and your media libraries, just to be sure they match.

You may also want to make a full export of the images alone, and try uploading the dated folders to to the new uploads directory.

Hoping this helps — good luck! And regarding your old site here, you can delete it, make it private, or add a site redirect that will send visitors to the same links on the new site. I usually just advise against deleting the site here, just in case you decide DIY isn’t for you after all. If you delete it, the address will be permanently deactivated. Making it private or redirecting it will allow you to use it again if you change your mind.

    Cheers!

When I look at what is imported, the posts are there but some media files are missing.
The first time I went through this, I did what you suggested, I just kept importing until it came back with message these media files are already here.
By that time I had triplicates of most photos, not a good thing.
I have another blog, bigger, and I’m wondering if it’s better to export a limited number of posts at a time? https://evadillnerblog.wordpress.com
If I upload the media files, won’t it just create more -1 -2 etc?
I’ll probably set up redirects once the site is up and running on my main domain, far too many places with the old links out there.

Regarding the export itself, it shouldn’t matter how big the site is, as long as the original site is still publicly accessible the importer should work.

With the duplication of imported items, the way the importer works is that it should skip items that were already imported. But, since you’re merging multiple sites into a single site, you may see some inconsistencies.

Again, we’re not able to control the import process nor troubleshoot it since we’re not hosting the site you’re importing to.

You should reach out to your new host for help with this issue. Since they’re hosting your site’s files, they also have access to those files and are the best ones to help you with this issue.
