Moving blog to new wordpress URL
-
Is there a way to export your wordpress-hosted blog, create a new blog, and upload the old one to the new url?
-
Would the new blog also be hosted at WP.com?
Currently offically no. There is a thread here somewhere that says that an export feature is on the todo list but its a bit down on the list. (Going from memory on this one.)
Now, you can use your RSS feed to do a “sort of” export of your posts. You would have to change the setting of the number of posts you have within your feed (Dashboard -> Options -> Reading -> Syndication Feeds -> Show the most recent #) to an amount over the number of current posts that you have. The full version of WordPress has an option to import an RSS generated file. The version we have currently on WP.com does not.
Is there a problem that you’re currently having with your current blog?

Thanks–no no problem. But since the username is part of the URL I thought I’d use something more memorable. Many thanks, Drmike.

I want to do the same thing– export my present blog contents to a WP new blog at BlueHost. I want to do this because I need to customize my template because my present theme (benevolence) looks ridiculous paired with my actual subject matter.
I would have no desire to move my blog if I could customize this template. Any ideas? All help much appreciated…

Velvetropewhore, (*cough* Intersting name there) see my reply about using the RSS feed to export here and import elsewhere. To my knowledge, that’s really the only current method available to use.
jquit, unfortunely, there’s no current method of importing such a feed into a WP blog. Only the MT and blogger blogs are currently supported.
You may want to drop a feedback though to the admins. This could be done as a MySQL move in the background. I don’t know if they would have the time to do such a thing for you though.
