Moving blog to owned domain

    I have a blog at: http://mrsmildredpierce.wordpress.com/

    Since bought a domain: http://www.mrsmildredpierce.com

How do I move my blog from wordpress TO my own domain?

I read the FAQs and this wasn’t covered under “domain mapping.”

In addition to owning a domain, you have to have a host. Then you download the wordpress.org software, install it, export your blog her and then import it there.

Domain mapping keeps your blog hosted here at wordpress.com but points it to the domain that you have registered.

I had the same question, and your answer is really helpful, Vivian.
Just to clarify, if I use domain mapping, even though my blog has been migrated to a different host, if people still have my old wordpress.com address bookmarked, they will be automatically redirected? I plan to use the wordpress software when I migrate my blog; is there some advantage to this when you do the migration?

No, there is no automatic redirection from WordPress.com available.

Well, they will be redirected to your domain name until the domain mapping expires (if you don’t extend it).

Ok, so it seems I’ll have to continue to pay the domain mapping fee if I want that to keep happening.

I’m wondering if this is something that wordpress could do for its users who feel they have outgrown the free service– like you could either pay wordpress directly to keep hosting your blog and have the flexibility of wordpress.org, or have a onetime fee for permanent rerouting. Do you think this is a possible future change?

When I started blogging I frankly had no idea what the difference was between the two but now I realize they are two completely different entities. I’m pretty technologically challenged and have learned a lot since then!

What I’ve done is to use domain mapping and tried to get everyone to update their bookmarks to my new url. (I actually just tonight went thru the links on my wordpress.com url on Technorati and sent emails to the sites that had the old address still on them.) That way, if I move, I won’t have to redirect folks.

Or at least I think that’s how it’s going to work.
