Moving custom domain bought on wordpress to tumblr!

Hi,
I bought a custom domain name via wordpress.com on 09 September 2011, and I now wish to move my blog to tumblr.com.
When I log in to my domain manager there through WordPress it says that my DNS settings ‘are not hosted here’, so I tried changing the A-record of the DNS settings on the WordPress Dashboard by entering the new IP address for tumblr (so my website would point to tumblr instead of wordpress) using this format –
MX <pref> <host>
TXT <text>
CNAME <subdomain> <host>
A <subdomain> <IP>but that didnt work either.
Then I read that I should just transfer ownership of my domain name to a new registrar entirely so I have full control over my DNS settings. I tried to do this (I am well past the 60 day limit) but when I followed the instructions, as per http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#transfer-to-another-registrar, I only received an email with the authorisation code and NOT the link to transfer the domain name.
I am completely stuck, and feel like I have tried every avenue!
Can someone please please help!

When transferring your domain, you need to initiate the transfer through the receiving registrar first, then follow the guide at http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#transfer-to-another-registrar
