Moving domain name from self hosted to wordpress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I’d like to downgrade my blog http://www.ohdearism.com from self hosted .org to .com.

I understand it’s simple enough to export and import the content. However the problem I have is with my domain name. I can’t sign up for http://www.ohdearism.wordpress.com as I already am ‘using’ this on my blog. So how do I start a blog to transfer my posts to. Do I call it something else and then change the name later? How do I get wordpress to understand that I own the domain and I want to transfer it?

    Thanks

WordPress.com does not currently accept incoming domain transfers, so you will have to keep it with your current domain registrar, which conveniently seems to be WildWestDomains. (Did you originally purchase your domain name through WordPress.com?)

ohdearism.wordpress.com does currently redirect to your self-hosted site, but you should be able to change this in your WordPress.com domain dashboard after purchasing the domain mapping upgrade. That will allow you to use your custom domain name with your WordPress.com site. See here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

By hosting your site here with a custom domain you are still bound by the same Terms of Service as all sites hosted on WordPress.com.

Same Rules Apply – The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not enable the permission to use advertising, any kind of prohibited code, or upload additional themes or plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com, which means that you will not have FTP access to your files and you will still be required to abide by our Terms of Service.

Also, it seems from the whois report I saw that the domain name ohdearism.com is due to expire January 7, so if you haven’t already extended it, please do so ASAP. Getting back an expired domain can get ugly.

    Hi Jen,

Thanks for your help. So to confirm – do I sign up with a random blog name, which I can change once I purchase domain mapping? So for example I could sign up with ohdearismblog.blogspot.com and then change this to ohdearism.com?

    Thanks,

    ohdearismblog.WORDPRESS.com, yes.

First of all, please renew your domain name if you haven’t yet.

As far as I can see, you can use the ohdearism.wordpress.com site, but since I don’t have x-ray vision and can’t see the underpinnings of your WPcom website, the next steps are rather tenuous and I’ll tag this for Staff assistance and confirmation.

Second, please disable the site redirect in your domain dashboard here on WordPress.com and set ohdearism.wordpress.com as the primary domain so that it shows up when accessed. Once that happens, we can know how to work from there. http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/#disabling-redirect

This will not disable/delete your current site on ohdearism.com, just stop forwarding anyone landing on ohdearism.wordpress.com to your domain.

Again, please renew your domain name if you haven’t yet. (Am I saying that loud enough? :) )

  • Hi Natalie – You already own the site address ohdearism.wordpress.com but it’s owned by a different WordPress.com user account than the one you’re currently logged into now.

Do you know what account that is? If so, please log out of your current WordPress.com account, and then you’ll be able to get to your old Dashboard, renew your domain, import your content and so forth.

Your domain is registered with us and it is about to expire, so please let me know ASAP if you can’t log into that account.

    Hi,

Thanks for your help. Yes have logged in an renewed the domain and have edited the DNS. This has not changed the redirect though so I assume this isn’t instant. An currently trying to import my old blog. I’ll let you know if any problems!

DNS propagation takes up to 72 hours across the web and for some reason the site owner seems to be the last to see it.

    But,

This has not changed the redirect

And it won’t until you either disable or delete it in your domain dashboard. Here again are the instructions: http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/#disabling-redirect

  • Hi Natalie – Wonderful! I see you updated the name servers, and the domain is pointing here on my end. If you still don’t see your WordPress.com site, try clearing your browser cache.
