Moving domain – what happens to existing URLS

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,

I currently have my site on WP at http://www.jamisonfink.com and have years of blog posts on the site. I am looking to unlink the URL (www.jamisonfink.com). Once I do that, will the content still be accessible at a wordpress URL, for example jamisonfink.wordpress.com?

And if so, can I make sure all existing links around the internet that formerly linked to a blog post (www.jamesonfink.com/blog-post-slug) are now redirected to that (www.jamesonfink.wordpress.com/blog-post-slug)?

And, lastly: would I be able to mask that URL to show http://www.jamesonfink.com/blog/blog-post-slug, instead?

    Self-declared URL: http://www.jamesonfink.com
    Jetpack: Unknown
    WP.com: Unknown

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Hey there @jamesonfink , can you confirm I’m understanding correctly?

    • You have a domain with an existing (self-hosted) WordPress installation at http://www.jamisonfink.com
    • You’d like the blog posts to exist here, at jamisonfink.wordpress.com for example
    • You want yourdomain.com/slug to redirect to jamisonfink.wordpress.com/slug
    • And then you’d like jamisonfink.wordpress.com/slug to display as jamisonfink.com/blog/slug

If you can share any context about your goals behind these changes, that will help us help you set this up in the best way possible. I tried taking a look at jamisonfink.wordpress.com and jamisonfink.com to get a better understanding, but neither site is available right now.

A few thoughts right off, though:

    • I’m concerned that you mentioned years of blog posts, but I can’t access the domain. Do you have backups of the data and media library? If you’ll be getting rid of your hosting soon, I’d recommend importing your content while the existing blog is publicly accessible. If you’ve just recently closed a hosting account, I’d urge you to get in contact with the host and restore that if possible, just for another month or so so you can access your data.
    • Do you still own the domain jamisonfink.com? If you want to redirect or use it in any way, you’ll want to keep that renewed. We can chat more about redirects when we know what you have in mind, but the short answer on that is that our ability to redirect a domain depends on whether it’s managed under our services.
    • A /blog/slug URL structure would be possible with the Business Plan or Ecommerce Plan, which both support custom URL structures. I am guessing you want to have the URL without blog for your main site? If so and if those plans aren’t a good fit for you, we can recommend other options. Understanding your goals and the reasons behind these changes will really help if you’re willing to share.
    • Also, the name jamisonfink.wordpress.com is uniquely available to you. If you’ll visit that link, you can register it now so you’ll have a site to import into.

Thanks in advance for any information you’re willing to share on this! If you’d rather chat privately, all of our paid plans include direct support, so you might just register jamisonfink.wordpress.com, skip the domain option for now, add a Personal Plan, then open a support request here.

    Cheers!

  • Ah! I just spotted the issue: some of the addresses have e instead of i. I can see the site now, whew! Do you intend to use both spellings?

Please do let us know what you have in mind and we’ll help you find the best option for moving forward. Cheers!

    Hi supernova,

Thanks so much for your thoughts! Apologies for the misspelling – only intending to use the correct spelling at jamesonfink.com. This is all accurate:

    • You have a domain with an existing (self-hosted) WordPress installation at http://www.jamisonfink.com
    • You’d like the blog posts to exist here, at jamisonfink.wordpress.com for example
    • You want yourdomain.com/slug to redirect to jamisonfink.wordpress.com/slug
    • And then you’d like jamisonfink.wordpress.com/slug to display as jamisonfink.com/blog/slug

Some more info that may be useful:
    – I’m currently using Big Scoots’s WordPress Optimized Servers to host the domain and own the domain.
    – I am looking to build a site on Squarespace that would be jamisonfink.com, but also keep my WordPress site as an archive of all my old writing/blog posts.
    – I am interested in “jamesonfink.wordpress.com” – but when I try to register it, it seems like I need to create a new account instead of the one I already have?

    Thanks in advanced!

    Thanks for the clarification.

To avoid confusion, there are three different “WordPress” at play here:

    1. The free, open-source WordPress software which powers your website.
    2. WordPress.org which is the open-source project that works on the WordPress software and where you can get the software for free to use on your own hosting provider.
    3. WordPress.com which is a managed hosting provider of the WordPress software and with whom you’re contacting now.

As such we can only help with and advise with sites hosted here, so the site on Big Scoots or Squarespace we aren’t able to help with.

Regarding jamesonfink.wordpress.com – are you not able to create the site under @jamesonfink? That URL is reserved for your user account, so you should be able to create it here: https://wordpress.com/sites

Let us know where you run into trouble if you’re still not able to create it.
