Moving domains

I purchased a domain via wordpress and it expired. Now I’m trying to build a website on a separate website builder but it will not let me repurchase the domain. What should I do?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hello!

I’m not a Staff member so I can’t see all of your info, can you post the domain name?

When a domain expires, it’s possible to recover the domain for some weeks afterwards, but after a few weeks, it’s no longer possible to recover through WordPress.com. It then goes to auction, where it can be resold, or if no one buys it, it will eventually return to public registry availability.

Cancelled domains are not released immediately, and it can take anything from a few days to over a year before a cancelled domain becomes available again, if at all. You should never cancel a domain that you still want to use, as there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to use it again somewhere else in future. Only let a domain lapse if you’re completely sure you no longer want it at all.

I hope you’re able to recover it! I’ll tag a MODLOOK so a staff member can check for you if it is still redeemable.

Thank you! The domain was getchogrindup.com

It expired about a month ago and I believe I cancelled the domain a few days ago because I thought if I did it would pop up on godaddy.com.

I did all this because I switched from wordpress to wix, and I thought I could use the 1 year free domain for my new company website.

Is there anything else that you know I can do? I tried to find a contact for wordpress but it seems the only thing I can do is this forum.

I tagged a MODLOOK on here, so a staff member should be by soon to look into it for you.

  • Hi there,

Expired domains are not released immediately, but go through a process of around 80 days before they are released for use again. Cancelling your domain while this process is underway does not change this, but merely gives up your ownership of the domain.

Currently your domain is still in the grace period after expiry. In another couple of weeks it will enter the redemption phase. At that point the domain is removed from our control, and we have to pay a $80 fee to get it back. This phase lasts for around 30 days. Then it enters the last phase where the registry that controls the domain prepare to completely delete and release it. At that point we can’t get it back any more.

Only after this final phase is the domain released and is it possible to register it somewhere else, but at that point anyone can buy it, and you run the risk of losing the domain should that happen.

You can read more about this process here:

    Domain Expiration

If you still want to use that domain, my recommendation is that we restore it to your account while it is still possible and while it is still in the grace period where you can renew it at the regular price. Once it’s restored, you’ll be able to transfer it to a different provider, while retaining ownership of the domain throughout.

Please let me know if you want to get that process started.

    Thank you for replying!

So I am trying to create a website with Wix, I get a free 1 year domain with them.

What would you recommend we do?

Ultimately I would like to have the domain, but I don’t know the process of switching it to Wix.

  • Hi there,

    You have two options:

    1. You can re-purchase the domain from us and then transfer it to Wix.

    2. Let the domain fully expire and then register it through Wix. This means that you have to wait around 80 days for the domain to be fully released and also this option increases the risk of a third-party acquiring the domain before you do.

Please let us know how you want to proceed.

Yes, let’s repurchase the domain through you so I can transfer it to wix

  • I’ve sent you a payment link via email. Once we receive your payment, we can restore the domain to your account and help you transfer it.

Also note that when you transfer the domain to Wix it will be renewed on their end for another year – this is how domain transfers work, regardless of provider, so you won’t lose any of the time on the domain for which you’ve already paid us.

Thank you! Just paid, what are the steps to moving the domain to wix?

  • Thanks for your payment. I’ve restored the domain to your account, so you’ll now be able to use it again.

To start a transfer, please follow these instructions to unlock your domain and request the transfer code:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/transfer-domain-registration/

Once you receive the transfer code via email, provide that to Wix – in their domain transfer steps there should be a place where you enter that code, and from there you just need to be patient – domain transfers typically take around a week to complete.
