moving entire test website to new domain
-
Hi all,
for weeks now I’ve been secretely working on a new fabulous website for my blog http://www.goestjes.com. I named the test site test.goestjes.be and I went for it. Now, my test website is totally finished and I would just like to copy everything exactely as it is onto my official blog pages (www.goestjes.com + http://www.goestjes.be (linking through to the first one)). This does not work. I can only copy content, not the plugins all the extra things I have intensively been working and so on. Is there a way in wich I can entirely clone/copy a whole wordpress blog? And, yes we have tried with WP clone but does not work. Thank you for your advice! The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there. I’m afraid all the time you spent on the test site has been for nothing.
Your site at http://goestjes.com/ is a free WordPress.com site for which you added a custom domain.
The test site you’ve been working on uses the open-source WordPress.ORG software.
Even though the two have the same name, they’re completely different, with different features, forums and support pages. On WordPress.com we can’t use plugins or custom themes, have no FTP access, can’t use JavaScript or Flash, and can only edit the CSS if we have an upgrade. And the only thing you can import from a WordPress.org site is the content. Nothing else.

Hi,
Thanks for you answer. I am in the process of moving my domain from the free wordpress.com to open source worpress.org, this is taking a few days. I know I have to wait till this has happened to change to copy the test blog to this domain.
My other domain Goestjes.be has already moved via One.com to wordpress.org – and it is in this towards this domain that I am trying to move test.goestjes.be. So it is there that I am experiencing all the trouble…I was planning on just migrating the test blog entirely into goestjes.be domain and than forwarding my visitors from goestjes.com towards goestjes.be…
Thanks a lot! -

If you’re moving to WordPress.org you can actually move your subscribers there as well. All you need is to install the Jetpack plugin on your WordPress.org site: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/

Thanks for that – but the issue lays mainly in the pluhins and all the lay-out details of the blog. When i am trying to migrate test.goestjes.be to goestjes.be with import/export i just get the content! All my work and extra plugins has been lost! Is there a way to copy all that in one go as well? Thanks a lot!

http://www.goestjes.be/ is also a WordPress.com site, so no. You won’t be able to import your test site to either goestjes.be or goestjes.com as they’re both on WordPress.com.
From your previous reply:
My other domain Goestjes.be has already moved via One.com to wordpress.org
Goestjes.be still shows the WordPress.com footer but its name servers are listed as One.com. The WhoIs data shows the last update to the domain was today, so I assume you just did this? It could be that your site’s DNS has not been updated yet, as this can take a couple of days from making the actual change.
It could also be that you still have an active domain mapping upgrade here which is confusing things. I’m going to tag this for staff so they can look at that and advise you further as my experience with domain-related issues is limited to what I’ve learned in this forum and the support doc – I’ve never worked with it myself. Please be patient while waiting for staff to respond.

To be honest, I’m a little surprised you haven’t been answered yet, as staff usually answer tagged threads within 24 hours. However, this depends on how many staff are on duty, how long the queue is, etc. so there’s no precise timeline I can give you. But I’ve never seen them not answer a tagged thread.
While you wait you might also want to go ask for advice in the WordPress.org forums. As your test site is on WP.org and you’re trying to move your main site over there, maybe they’ll also have some advice for you: https://wordpress.org/support/

Hi there,
Right now, you have two sites:
- Your WordPress.com site at http://goestjes.com/
- Your self-hosted WordPress site at http://test.goestjes.be/
You also have the domain http://www.goestjes.be/ set up to display your WordPress.com site http://goestjes.com/ in an iframe. (That shows the content of the site http://goestjes.com/ at that other domain name.)
If you want your domains http://goestjes.com/ and http://www.goestjes.be/ to show the site you set up at http://test.goestjes.be/, you can do that by pointing your domains to your host where you set up that site. Since the domain goestjes.com is registered here at WordPress.com, you can use our guide to Move Your Domain to Another Host to accomplish that.
Any other changes you need to make to the new site will have to be made at your new host, where you set up http://test.goestjes.be/. Since that is a self-hosted WordPress site, that involves a process that WordPress.com staff can’t help with — you will need to contact your web host or the WordPress.org forums for more assistance. You can also use the WordPress.org guide to Moving WordPress to change your site’s domain name from test.goestjes.be to goestjes.com. (That way, when someone visits goestjes.com they will see the site you set up at test.goestjes.be.)

I didn’t know one could do that (not here, of course, but in general). Thanks for teaching me something new :-D

You’re welcome! The “www” subdomain for http://www.goestjes.be/ is a bit of a giveaway, because domains that are fully mapped to WordPress.com (instead of using an iframe) will remove that “www” subdomain. You can also double check in most browsers by right-clicking when you’re on the site — you’ll usually see options like “Reload Frame” and “View Frame Source” that indicate it’s displaying an iframe.
It’s not a recommended way to set up domains in general, though, because the domain doesn’t work as completely as when it’s mapped. For example, when you navigate around the site at http://www.goestjes.be/ the address in your browser’s address bar won’t change.
That might be more information than you really wanted to know about domains and iframes, but I find it pretty fascinating so I thought I’d share a bit more! :)

I noticed the www and that the name servers didn’t match, but didn’t even think to right-click the site. Next time I’ll know.

Not at all. I’m actually doing an online code camp at the moment to learn more about web-based programming and web development, so I’m also fascinated by how the web works, what’s possible, etc.
