moving follower from wp.com to wp.org

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi
I am just about to move my blog from from minmandsitalienskekoekken.wordpress.com to my self hostet site http://www.minmandsitalienskekoekken.dk. I was thinking to use the JetPack plugin to get som of the wp.com features on my new blog as well, especially the ‘follow feature’ – is it possible to move followers from the old blog to the new?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I can think of two solutions.

    1. You can continue to use WordPress.com, but simply map your existing site to your custom domain (www.minmandsitalienskekoekken.dk). This would keep you blog and followers as is.

    2. A second option would be to install the WordPress software wherever your domain is hosted. You can find assistance on how to do this here. Once you’ve successfully installed WordPress with your host, you’ll need to transfer the contents of your current blog. This requires you to export the contents from your WordPress.com blog and then import the exported contents to your new self-hosted blog. You can read about how to do that here. Once you have completed the transfer of the blog, you’ll need to use Jetpack on your WordPress.com account to export your subscriptions. Then you should contact WordPress.com support directly to see if they can transfer the followers for you. Read this post to see how to go about it.

    Install and configure JetPack.

I have flagged this for the staff to transfer your subscribers for you

You have both domain names in your original Post so the staff will know where to transfer the subscribers to.

CAUTION – don’t delete your blog here – JetPack also has Stats and you need a blog here to make JetPack stats & such to work

Thanks!! I already moved all content and I installed and activated jetPack.
I will not delete my old blog then – but can I delete the posts without problems? So that the old blog will be ’empty’ with only one post, saying that the blog has moved…

The subscribers have been moved as requested.

If the blog content is moved, then you can safely delete them from your WordPress.com blog. However, you can also keep them and create a static front page redirecting your users to the new blog: http://en.support.wordpress.com/front-page

Or, to redirect the traffic from your WordPress.com blog to a new site, you can need to purchase the Site Redirect upgrade. You can set it up by following the instruction here:

    Site Redirect

Provided you have the same permalink structure on your new site and your WordPress.com blog, all of your permalinks will be redirected as well.

Thanks a lot! I will sure do the Site Redirect update, when the new site is ready (still needs some final works..) I didn’t do nothing about the permalinks, or the titles of my posts – so will the structure be the same automatically?
I get new followers everyday on the wp.com blog – (which is still the active one) so I will write again, when I ‘close’ is (in one way or another) so we might have to transfer the last followers once again.
    Thanks again for your help!

The permalinks will redirect automatically when you have the Site Redirect upgrade.

Just let me know when you’re ready for followers to move and I’ll transfer them for you.

    Thank you.

Thank you so much! I have two more questions:

    1. When I transferred the content, some of the featured images didn’t show up on the new blog, and – there has been a lot of comments since I transferred the content. Can I export and import the content one more time, when the new blog i all ready, to get the last content over as well – or will I have ‘double content’ in that case?

    2. The plugin JetPack is making the site run very slow – can i do something about that?

    Thanks again
    /Marie

And another question – I just realized, that when I update blogpost on the new site (just changing small mistakes, pictures and so on), then it publish again sending out emails to all my followers – I don’t want to spam them with old blogpost, so how can I do to update without re-publishing??

    Thanks!!

Regarding your import question: WordPress should only import new content when you import again.

You can deactivate some of the Jetpack modules, please follow these steps: http://jetpack.me/support/activate-and-deactivate-modules/

It won’t send out e-mail to followers if the blog is already published. If you unpublish the blog by changing its status (for example to ‘draft’) and then publish the post again, your followers will be notified.

Thanks so much for the quick reply!!

    1. Yes, here is an example:
Post on new site without featured image: http://www.minmandsitalienskekoekken.dk/fritterede-rejer-calamari-og-ansjoser-fritto-di-calamari-gamberi-e-acciughe/
And on old blog with featured image: http://minmandsitalienskekoekken.wordpress.com/2013/08/17/fritterede-rejer-calamari-og-ansjoser-fritto-di-calamari-gamberi-e-acciughe/

I see that the image is not saved in the library on the new site – it just uses the URL to the old blog to show the mage.

    2. Thanks for the link – I will do that!

    3. I just tried again to ‘edit’ a post, I just entered and clicked update – the status remained ‘Published’ – and it send out emails anyway.. How to solve??

In that case you might want to import again to make sure the image is imported as well.

Do you perhaps have anything checked on the Settings > Email Post Changes page ? if so, please uncheck the boxes.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi again
Sorry, I can’t find that page? Under ‘settings’ in dashboard I don’t see anything called ‘Email Post Changes’?
I will try to import again to get all photos.
    Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry about that, that seems to be a .com feature only. Could you try and install this plugin: http://wordpress.org/plugins/email-post-changes/ and then disable the checkboxes on the page I was referring to in my earlier reply. Hopefully that should resolve the issue.

    Looking forward to your reply.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks, I installed the plugin and unchecked boxes. Hope it works now – I did a test and made an ‘update’, and I didn’t receive any mail yet (I follow my own blog, in that way I know if theese kind of things happen.. :-))

I deactivated some plugins and also some of the JetPack modules – but it’s still quite slow.. can I do anything else?

    Thanks so much!

I can’t seem to reach your http://www.minmandsitalienskekoekken.dk/ site now. It shows a message with a redirect to your WordPress.com blog.

I’d be happy to take a look once your site is launched.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yeah, thats right – it’s on ‘maintainance mode’ as I’m still working on it (in between my ‘real work’) I’ll write you as soon as I launch it – hopefully very soon!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi again
I’m about to be ready to launch my new site/blog, I’m trying to set up the Site redirect – but I can’t get it to work. When I enter the new URL in the first step in set up, I get this message: “Your blog cannot be redirected to that URL. Please make sure the URL is valid.” I enter; “www.minmandsitalienskekoekken.dk” – what’s wrong? Thanks!!

  • Unknown's avatar

Could you try to fill in the address without ‘www’, so: minmandsitalienskekoekken.dk

Let me know when you want me to move your subscribers.

  • Unknown's avatar

Great, thanks – that worked! Is it active right away?
Then you can move subscribers now.
