Moving followers from old website to new one

    Dear wordpress.com staff,

Months ago I changed my blog address lightbearersforjesus.wordpress.com to lightbearersforjesuschrist.wordpress.com. I just found out that I will lose the followers of the old one. Is there a way to move them to the new one? I hope there is a way because I don’t want them to miss out on the new posts that are being added.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. Staff can move them for you, yes. I’ve tagged this thread for them to follow up.

It might be a good idea to publish a post on your old blog notifying followers of the address change. This is specifically for the sake of people following your blog’s RSS feed directly as staff won’t be able to move them.

    Hi there,

When you change your blog address using the address change tool, like you did, all of your subscribers are moved to that new address automatically. Your subscribers are still linked to your blog and getting updates. :)

  • Oops! Didn’t notice that bit :)

No worries, kokkieh! I had the advantage of being able to double check that in our records to make sure that’s what happened. :) Thanks for your help!

  • Always a pleasure :)

Thank you all for replying back. I have been noticing that I’ve been getting less visitors on the site and thought that maybe that had to do with changing the blog address. Is there a reason for that?

Plus I can’t let the followers know of the new website on the old one because the old one has been deleted.

I changed my blog address by going to Delete Site in the WP Admin. I didn’t know there was another way.

  • Changing the address could cause a temporary drop in search engine rankings, but that usually recovers after a few weeks, especially if you post as often as before the address change.

It could also just be the natural ebb and flow of traffic. In my experience it’s fairly normal that visitor levels fluctuate over time.

There would have been an option to keep the old address when you changed to the new one, but if you deleted the old address there’s nothing that can be done about it.

Just keep creating good quality content for your site and connect with others by commenting on their blogs, and eventually you’ll see your traffic pick up again.

Thanks, kokkieh. Can staff still move the followers to the new blog even though the old blog isn’t in operation anymore?

  • As @rachelmcr said above, your followers were automatically moved when you changed your address. If you had any RSS followers (and they would be in the minority) they are lost, but all your WordPress.com followers were moved with your blog, so you didn’t lose any of them.

Oh, good. That’s a relief to me. Thank you all for your help. I really appreciated it.

  • I’m sure I’m speaking for @rachelmcr as well when I say you’re very welcome :)

Hi I found this link because I was looking to change my blog address. I’ve already purchased the new .com with wordpress that I want to use and in the ‘My Domains’ section I’m given and option to make it my primary address. What is the difference between changing the primary domain and changing the blog address? Unsurprisingly I’m most concerned about keeping followers and SEO. I definitely don’t want to keep or return to my current blog address once I’ve moved. My blog is http://www.thecreativitycauldron.com

What you’re speaking about is something completely different.

Your address won’t change at all. Instead, the address you bought will be laid over your free WordPress.com address. Your content will still remain at the WordPress.com address and all the old links to posts at that address will still work, but when visitors view your site they’ll see the custom domain in their browsers instead. Your followers won’t be affected at all and might not even notice the change unless you point it out.

You will see a temporary drop in traffic from search engines, as the search engines will have to re-index your site at the new address. But from what I’ve read your search ranking should recover to its previous level within a few weeks.

Can you please start a new thread, as your problem is completely unrelated to the others in this thread. You can use this link: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1
