Moving footer widgets to sidebar in Wu Wei

  Hi,

  I would like to display my categories, recent comments, and other elements in my footer to be on the left sidebar – is there a way i can do this or will I just have to find another theme?

  The Wu Wei theme is not coded to provide a sidebar for widgets – widgets can only be placed in the 3 footer areas. We cannot edit templates or themes and we cannot use CSS editing to change what’s coded into the theme templates. CSS editing can only be used to change appearance, not functionality

  Does the Custom Design upgrade let me edit HTML?

  Sometimes its’ possible ro rearrange things to fit though. Try this in Wu Wei to see if it gets you closer to what you’re looking for:

  position: absolute;

  Note that doesn’t account for the navigation bar which you aren’t using right now, so if you adjust your theme, you may also need to add/adjust CSS too.

  This will get you started. The “right” footer area is now the right sidebar area beside the posts. The two remaining footer widget areas have been adjusted to sit below the content for balance.

  Hi,

  Thanks so much for your helpful replies – I tried both but they weren’t quite what I was hoping for – was sort of hoping there might be a way of getting the widgets to sit underneath the post title and date, rather than to the left of the whole thing, if that makes sense..?!

  I don’t know if that’s possible, I’m considering changing theme and starting from scratch as there are maybe too many changes that I need to make to this one to suit what I want..

  Well, the post titles and dates are repeated several times on the page, so I’m not sure it would work like you’re suggesting (or I’m not clear on what you’re asking).

  Sorry I missed the “left” in your post here, but as @designsimply says, this would not really work as the widgets would very likely end up covering up post titles and such.

  Well, the post titles in Wu Wei aren’t really a left sidebar even though they kinda seem like they are.

  Yes you’re right, sorry, it wouldn’t work on the left would it..

  sacredpath – did you write your code for the widgets to sit on the right? When I typed yours in it went to the left in a slightly strange way – I like how yours extended the banner though, and maybe it might work to sit to the right..but it’s going left..?!

  I tested the code thesacredpath posted on your blog using the Chrome web inspector and it looked like this in my test with one of the footer columns now appearing a the top right: http://cl.ly/CyUQ

  The other two footer columns were still at the bottom of the content area.

  That looks really nice – it’s not working here though, I wonder why..I’ve just copied and pasted to the bottom, is that the right thing to do?

  I don’t see it in your custom CSS. Are you sure you copied in just the code mentioned by thesacredpatch above and clicked the preview button? Is this the link you used to test the code?

  Note that you cannot save the new CSS permanently until you purchase the custom design upgrade.

  Also, you should not copy and paste the entire original stylesheet. You should just copy in the changes that you want to add.

  Ah! It’s done it. Started again and it’s worked this time, thanks. I havent purchased the upgrade yet as I wanted to check first that it would look better – this is looking hopeful though – could I get the archive there too do you think?

  Oh, just seen that if I move the widgets to the right footer area, they now appear to the right sidebar, hooray! I think it’s going to work…thanks so much for your help!

  Ok one last thing – if I sign up to the css custom upgrade can I change font colour too? For instance I’d like to change the categories list from orange to black/grey..
