Moving from aws ec2 to wordpress.com hosting

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
    My current situation
    ———————————-
I have a WordPress blog currently running on AWS EC2. The domain name is also registered with AWS. I would like to do the following and any help/guidance towards the same will be greatly appreciated.
    Goal
    ——–
    1. Move my website to wordpress.com and have WordPress manage my infrastructure.
    2. I am looking to signup for Business hosting plan.
    3. I would like to move my domain registration to wordpress.com

I have tried to do a bit of research in the support forums here and got some good pointers. But following are still outstanding:

    Open Questions
    —————————
    1. Once I get the database backed up and files downloaded, will someone from WordPress help with onboarding the site on WordPress? How long does this take?
    2. Will WordPress backup my site every day?
    3. If I need to reach out to someone at WordPress for technical assistance (if site is slow or worse, its down…), what is the best and fastest way to get help?
    4. I understand that WordPress will run and manage infrastructure. If site traffic increases, how does WordPress handle that? Is that process completely transparent to us – the users.
    5. If I were to provide ads on my site at a future date, is that a fairly straight forward process or quite difficult? How does revenue sharing work?
    6. Since site will be running on wordpress.com infrastructure, do I need to separately subscribe to any Jetpack plan or all of that will be built-into WordPress infrastructure?
If there are any other pertinent things that I need to consider, please let me know.

    Thank you so much!
    SGRShanthy.

  • Hi there,

    1. Once I get the database backed up and files downloaded, will someone from WordPress help with onboarding the site on WordPress? How long does this take?

While we do provide SFTP access on our Business Plan, it’s not possible to migrate a site by uploading a database and site files directly to a site on our servers. If your current site is built using the open source WordPress software, you can migrate the content to us using a regular WordPress export file. Or on our Business Plan you might be able to use a plugin like All-in-one WP Migration to migrate your site, but that would depend on how the current site is configured.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/#transferring-your-blog

    Use SFTP on WordPress.com

WordPress.com is designed as a DIY hosting platform, so we don’t do the migration for you, but our live chat support staff can guide you through the process. You’ll have access to live chat as soon as you upgrade to a paid plan.

    2. Will WordPress backup my site every day?

The Business Plan includes the Jetpack Professional service, which does real-time backups of your site.

    3. If I need to reach out to someone at WordPress for technical assistance (if site is slow or worse, its down…), what is the best and fastest way to get help?

Our Business Plan comes with 24/7 live chat support. You can reach support at any time via the help icon that appears bottom-right on all My Site pages, or via the direct link at https://wordpress.com/help/contact

    4. I understand that WordPress will run and manage infrastructure. If site traffic increases, how does WordPress handle that? Is that process completely transparent to us – the users.

WordPress.com is built to scale, and we host sites that receive millions of visitors a day. The resources allocated to your site are adjusted automatically as needed.

    5. If I were to provide ads on my site at a future date, is that a fairly straight forward process or quite difficult? How does revenue sharing work?

The Business Plan gives you automatic access to our WordAds program. All you need to do is click a button to activate it, and provide your PayPal account’s email address (and your SSN/Tax ID if you are a US resident)

    Earn Money From Ads

If you want to use any other ad service, how that works will depend on the service you choose to use, and will likely involve installing a plugin or adding custom code to the site. We can help you with those specific actions in that case, but support for the ad service itself will be provided by the particular service provider.

    6. Since site will be running on wordpress.com infrastructure, do I need to separately subscribe to any Jetpack plan or all of that will be built-into WordPress infrastructure?

The Business Plan comes with Jetpack Professional included, and support for any Jetpack-related features are provided by our support team.

Let us know if you have any other questions.
