moving from godaddy to wordpress

i have a parked (non active) domain name at godaddy.com. can i still use the domain name here at wordpress if that website is not “active”? do i have to have them release the domain name?

If you have a site with a custom domain and then upgrade to a plan, you’ll receive an automatic discount for the domain, but you will need to buy the plan using the same username account that already owns the domain.
How domain mapping works
Registering an underlying .wordpress.com URL first is required for domain mapping. That underlying URL does not have to match the domain URL when you are domain mapping. What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. @brando12685 as long as you control the settings for the domain at GoDaddy, you can map it here. Try these steps:
If you’re able to do that, choose a plan here:
https://wordpress.com/plansThen use the domain credit at https://wordpress.com/domains
And finally just give your computer a few hours for the domain changes to take effect. Let us know if you need more help!
