Moving from my own wordpress-based blog to wordpress-hosted blog

    hi,

I have a wordpress blog sitting on a web hosting environment (running version 2.2.1), and I’m now considering doing away with web hosting subscription and just go with wordpress hosting since the latter now supports domain hosting.

However, when I try to import my blog (which I have exported from my current blog) into wordpress, none of the attachments are migrated over. How can I go about doing it?

also, with the wordpress hosting free subscription, can I still have customised theme, or must I pay to subscribe to custom CSS just to have customisation?

What do you mean by attachments?

You cannot have custom themes at WP.com. If you know CSS you can pay for the upgrade and use that to customise the appearance of your blog but not its functionality. You will find that there are a lot more limits on what you can do with your blog here – no ads, no plugins, no custom themes. Make sure that’s really what you want before you switch.

oh, so I basically I have to leave with the default themes but I assume there’s more than 1 default theme, and I can add my own banner graphics to the default theme.

By attachment, I meant that in my current blog, I have uploaded zip and image files (via the wordpress editor), and inserted links to the uploaded files in my blog post. Can I retain those content (both the links and files) when I move over to wordpress?

also, by moving over to worpress.com, I assume domain hosting is possible (paid $10 as I understood). But can I only point one subdomain to wordpress (e.g. http://www.wordpress.com) as I have another subdomain pointing to my photo hosting site.

    Hi Zenybee,

All your posts could be imported from your hosting space to your wordpress.com, I am not very sure about the attachments.

As far as I know, the uploaded zip files(and stuff) would still be in the hosting space physically and it has to be moved to wordpress.com manually.

    Thanks,
    G

Yeah just to add to what jeygikul was saying, my understanding is that you would have to move the zip files to wordpress.com manually, and then you would have to update your links in each post to make sure they are linking to the wordpress.com Media Library and not to your previous host.
There is just one think I dont understand and that is, if your files are still with your previous host, why dont the links still work in the new blog? Maybe another volunteer knows.
