Moving from .org to .com
-
Hi There
I actually was in wordpress.com earlier. The later moved to wordpress.org. Now I want to move my blog back to wordpress.com. I followed the steps given in support forum but still I see my blog is hosted in worpress.org. Can you please help?

Hi there!
I went in and reset your DNS for “thereddotman.com” to point to your WordPress.com site. Please note that it might take 24-48 hours for the changes to fully take effect. If you still have the problem after that, please let me know.
I hope that helps!

Oh, thank you so much :), So now I login to my site just the way I used to login at wordpress.com earlier?
-
Umm…. the changes seem to have taken effect. However some posts, recent ones which I made while I was in .org are missing!! How can I get them back ? :(
-
I’m guessing I should download the xml file from the .org site and import it here in the .com. But How do I do it? How do I access my old site?
-
Not to mention all my css customization has disappeared. I’m sorry I’ve been bombarding with questions. It’s just that I spent a lot of time and effort on my previous .org site and seeing it all gone has kinda made me heart broken. Awaiting your helpful response. :)

You will need to change your domain name servers back to your old host if you haven’t exported your posts from your self-hosted site. Please let me know what your former nameservers were and I can switch them back temporarily so you can export your content. We don’t save any records, so there’s no way for me to look up what they were prior to your request.
Your CSS customizations will not transfer over to WordPress.com when you import your blog.
Let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, I’ll wait to hear back from you with the old nameserver information.
Thanks!

1st Nameserver: ns163.hostgator.com
2nd Nameserver: ns164.hostgator.comI hope that’s the info which you had asked. Btw, if I copy the style.css from my old site on to the new one, of course I will purchase the 30$ css feature, and paste it in the css of the new site, then will I be able to retain my css customization?
Please, there must be some way of retaining css customization?
-
I have changed your nameservers back.
You wouldn’t be able to copy the entire style.css from your old site to work on WordPress.com.
If you are using the same theme, you might be able to reuse some of your code. However, a theme that will work on self-hosted WordPress may be different “under the hood” than the same theme on WordPress.com, which would make it difficult to straight copy and paste the CSS.
You can always try by adding the Custom Design upgrade, and if it doesn’t work for you then you can request a full refund as long as it’s within 30 days of purchase.
Let me know when you’re ready to switch your nameservers back to WordPress.com. Make sure you have a full export and that you’ve imported it into your thereddotman.wordpress.com site before I proceed.
Thanks!

When I try to open thereddotman.com/wp-admin, it still asks to me to login to the wordpress.com site. And I still see the recent posts missing. Can you please suggest how do I log in to the old site and export?
-
Also, in my browser when I type thereddotman.com, it takes me to thereddotman.wordpress.com, is this a temporary change due to redirecting of name servers?
-
The changes took effect. I was able to export old site. I’m ready to change back to wp.com. I’m still thinking about the site address going to thereddotman.wordpress.com do I have to re purchase by domain, thereddotman.com at wp.com?
-
Your domain is registered here at WordPress.com, so you don’t need to do anything.
I changed the primary domain on your WordPress.com site temporarily so you could work on both sites simultaneously. Once we switch the nameservers back to WordPress.com, your domain will be the primary domain on WordPress.com.
I’ve submitted the nameserver changes again. Please note it may take up to 24 hours for these changes to take effect.
I hope that helps!

Your can access your WordPress.com site’s dashboard by going to this link:
http://thereddotman.wordpress.com/wp-admin/What will take 24 hours is the nameserver changes that will point your domain to WordPress.com.
I hope that clarifies things.
-
I’m sorry, I’m a dolt with these techy things. So, from now on if I hit the address thereddotman.com, it will take me to my new site? Or should I go to thereddotman.wordpress.com?
-
Either one works. Typing in “thereddotman.wordpress.com” will redirect you to “thereddotman.com” regardless of the nameserver.
I just provided you with the direct link to your WordPress.com site’s dashboard (which will always be “thereddotman.wordpress.com/wp-admin/” regardless of your domain name”) in case you wanted to import your content while you waited for the nameserver change.
I hope that helps.
-
Thanks. That sure helped.
Another thing, only on my about me page. I notice that the comments have not imported. I mean the comments are as of when I made the move to wp.org. The comments that I received while I was in wp.org are not showing up in wp.com. Will this also resolve when the nameservers changes take effect?
-
I notice that the comments have not imported.
I just checked your about page and it looks like the comments imported just fine.
It looks like you’re all set! Happy blogging!
-
Thank you so much for your help so far. It’s almost completely set and I’m already working on my customizations.
Btw, do you see the comment count as 42 on the about me page? Because that was the last count I remember. It shows 24 at the moment for me.
