Moving from self-hosted to wordpress.com

After much frustration I have decided to move out of the self-hosted wordpress blog and come to the comfort of a wordpress.com, I know – Maybe not many do this since most topics of discussions are for the other way round.

Before I finally do make the move, I have a couple of things which I need help understanding.

    1) My old blog is at http://www.kapilb.com/blog – When I move that domain for my kapilb.wordpress.com how do I ensure I don’t lose the mapping because of the folder “blog” Will people be forwarded to the new setup when the click on old links. How can I ensure this happens?

    2) WordPress.Com now offers Custom Email forwards. currently how I have set it up with my hosing provider is all mail sent to (email visible only to moderators and staff) gets sent to (email visible only to moderators and staff) and I can also send out email with a custom domain. Will that be disrupted and will i need an email hosting separately.

    Thanks for the time!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

I just want to make sure I understand your questions really quick.

In regards to number 1, are you asking how to ensure that those who go to a URL such as (as a random example) http://kapilb.com/blog/2013/10/15/skoda-octavia-classifieds-ad-good-copy-work/ that they’ll still find that URL when you move it to WordPress.com?

Well, we can map your blog to the exact same URL, so that kapilb.wordpress.com will go to kapilb.com/blog. Any posts which you import will have the same post slug, so links within your blog should still go to the same page, though you will definitely want to test them.

In regard to your question about email, you will definitely need to set up an email forwarder, however once you do there should be little to no disruption of this. The sending out email using the custom domain is a function of Gmail, so there shouldn’t be any settings which need to be updated.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Actually I am looking for it to work the other way round.

Well, we can map your blog to the exact same URL, so that kapilb.wordpress.com will go to kapilb.com/blog.

All traffic coming to the current blog: http://www.kapilb.com/blog must get mapped to the content at kapilb.wordpress.com

Possible? Since the blog is not in the root folder but in a directory “blog”.

Possible, but you’d have to ask for instructions for that at WordPress.ORG, since that’s not a WP.com site.
