Moving from Self-Hosted to WordPress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to move my site from a self-hosted site to a wordpress.com site. I have exported the XML file from the self-hosted site, and performed an import on the wordpress.com site. It seems like some of the data is moved (i.e. there are files in the library), but none of the posts or pages have moved.

    Please advise.

Is there anyone that can help me with this. It has been over a month since I posted without a reply.

    Here is an update.

I tried again to import using a newer export. I get the notification:

“Your import from WordPress to YOURBLOG has finished.
Check out posts or pages to see your imported content.”

But when I click either posts or pages I get a screen that says:

You haven’t published any posts yet.
Would you like to publish your first post?

    Clearly there is a problem.

  • Hi there,

I see what you are saying – your blog is still completely void of post and pages from my end as well. I’m going to test the import from my side and see if we can get the rest of your count on the site. I’ll let you know once I am done.

    Thanks!

  • Hey there,

I did some testing and got the same results that you received. I wanted to see if I could get XML files from you via dropbox (or something else similar), so that I could do some further troubleshooting. I’ll e-mail you now.

    Thanks!

I wanted to let you know that I am also trying some other avenues. I am exporting in sections rather than choosing “all” from the self-hosted site since I noticed every time I just choose that it gives me an error at the end of the XML.

    • I exported just pages, and that seems to have imported properly.
    • I exported just posts, and while the exported XML not not end abruptly, it doesn’t seem to import properly, but am trying again.
    • Exporting all media I get an error at the bottom of the XML. I am not sure about the media files, because some of them have already imported. I was thinking about exporting in sections based on time. I’ll continue with testing this theory, but might need you to empty the site so that I can start over.

Please keep in touch with what you can figure out, and again thanks for your help.

Update: I got posts to import, but now a lot of the images are not connected even though they are imported. Do I need to import media after the posts?

  • Hey @wrotenfamily,

Great job on troubleshooting the issues. The images are usually pulled from the previous site during the import – assuming the previous site is still activated and accessible.

So, I would either retry importing the media files while the self-hosted site is accessible. If it is no longer accessible, I would retry importing the images over now that you have the pages and posts imported successfully. Let me know if you have any success.

    Thanks!
