moving from squarespace

  • Unknown's avatar

hello, i want to move to wordpress from squarespace with a domain i bought through them. is it better to transfer entirely or point traffic from there here? (i think moving it entirely but not sure what the benefit is of pointing traffic, i want to make sure that’s not the right option.)

    I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

    hello there,

You can follow the steps in this guide on how to transfer your domain to WordPress

    https://wordpress.com/support/domains/incoming-domain-transfer/

  • Hi there,

We have a guide on how to transfer your current site from Squarespace over to us:

    Import from Squarespace

We also have a guide on domain connection vs transfer that you can read here:

    https://wordpress.com/support/domain-connection-vs-domain-transfer/

So, if you have a domain you want to use at WordPress.com that you have hosted with Squarespace, you do indeed have the option to connect or transfer that domain.

First, you can transfer the domain without having to purchase a paid plan. However, using a domain at WordPress.com without a plan prevents you from making the domain primary. When someone types in your custom domain, it will automatically forward to your WordPress.com subdomain:

    Domains

Otherwise, you can purchase a WordPress.com plan and set your domain as the primary domain.

The biggest factors to consider would be who you want to host your domain, how much your domain host currently costs compared to the domain only or domain + plans packages we offer here, and whether or not you want to host your domain and site at the same place.

If you transfer the domain to WordPress.com, we’ll manage the domain. Assuming you want the domain primary, you’ll pay for the mapping and the plan here (domain is included within the plan price for the first year).

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

But, if you keep the domain with your current host and map the domain to WordPress.com, your current host will continue to manage the domain and you’ll still need to pay them for hosting your domain (in addition to purchasing a paid plan with us).

Hope this helps, please let us know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

Thank you, this is helpful. Can I start building my new site on WP before I transfer the domain or is it better to transfer the domain first?

  • Hi!

Can I start building my new site on WP before I transfer the domain or is it better to transfer the domain first?

Transferring the domain doesn’t necessarily make it live here, so you’re welcome to do that whenver it makes the most sense to you. Like, if you’re just coming up on your domain renewal there, better to transfer it here ASAP. Otherwise it really doesn’t matter: the transfer itself takes a few days, but you can point the domain to the new site before the transfer, or after it.

    Personally I’d recommend this order:

    – Import your content

    – Go ahead and get your plan so you’ll have direct support and any extra tools you need. You can transfer your domain at that point, or wait til later.

    – If you need to customize your theme’s colors and what not, you can.

    – The layouts don’t always transfer the same way, so I’d recommend editing a page and just inserting a pattern you like at the top of the page. Then you can copy / paste your content into the pattern as you’d like til it’s all where you want it and the pages look good.

    – When you’re ready, you can make the site live by updating your domain settings. If you waited to transfer it, I’d recommend connecting it first using these steps, then initiating the transfer, since the transfer can take a few days.

Once you change the domain settings, the new site will be live within a few hours.

Let us know if you need help along the way!

Thank you for your detailed reply. I fear I’m too stoopid to follow these instructions. How can I import my content without setting a site up first? When I go to to “get started” I’m prompted to enter a domain or transfer a domain. Is this step required before I do an import of my content from Squarespace?

  • Hi @meghanlplambeck, no worries. We can help you through this. Just know our response time in the free forums can be a bit slower on the weekends, but we’ll be here.

Try starting with just yoursitename.wordpress.com or meghanlplambeck.wordpress.com or something similar. You’ll add the real name later.

    Then try these steps:

    Import from Squarespace

The site may look funny, but it’ll be fixable. Let know when you’re ready the next steps.

Awesome thank you. I think i have imported all the content. What are next steps? How do I make sure the site isn’t live or public yet?

  • Hi! Good work.

It won’t be public until you launch it, so no worries there.

    I’d recommend these steps next:

    1. Delete Hello World from https://wordpress.com/posts – click the three dots by the post to see that action.

    2. Go to https://wordpress.com/pages and (with the three dots there) choose to edit About.

    3. Try inserting a pattern. We have a how-to video here:
    https://wordpress.com/support/video-tutorials/using-the-block-editor/#block-patterns

You can switch out the text and images using the text and images you already have there.

    4. Then you can edit your other pages too.

When you’re ready, let’s talk about any further changes you want to make to the site. You can keep the style you have, or customize it, or start with a different look and feel and customize that. We’ll cross that bridge when we get there! And then you should be ready to launch. :)

Awesome, thank you! I will play around with this and let you know when I need more help. Likely soon. :)

I tried editing the about page by inserting a pattern block, but I can’t seem to figure out how to edit the fonts? Is a pattern block different than inserting a theme?

  • We’ll be here. Cheers!

  • (Also, I’m excited to see how it turns out!)

Hi again, I’ve added a theme but can’t seem to figure out how to customize it? the font appears huge and when I try playing with the styles settings, nothing seems to change? What am I doing wrong?

  • You can customize your site through the Site Editor (Appearance > Editor). For example, to adjust the post title’s size, you can select it and adjust its size from the sidebar. Here’s a screenshot:

Thank you! Does the same work when it comes to editing the About page? Im on that one now and there seems to be no option at all for editing that I can see?

  • Hello there,

That should be possible from the About page yes. What are you seeing exactly?

  • Unknown's avatar

how can I add a screengrab here?

  • Here are screenshot instructions if you are not familiar:

    https://wordpress.com/support/make-a-screenshot/

You can just upload the screenshot to your media library and staff will be able to see it.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok Im doing that now. Can you see it?
