Moving from Squarespace to WordPress.com
-
After seven years with Squarespace I am looking for a more blog-friendly environment and am contemplating moving to WordPress.com. I have read about the differences between WordPress and WordPress.com and feel that .com would suit me best. I have an active blog with over 3,000 posts (several images in each post) and need to ensure continuity. I have a domain hosted by a third party (one.com) and am familiar with remapping, so that isn’t a problem. My main concern is maintaining integrity, including preservation of past URLs. I have several active pages on the blog, although one is the main and the others mainly used for support documentation, but it is important to be able to transfer all pages and maintain the integrity of links.
I am not familiar with the inner workings of a blog and want a painless transition, ideally with someone to help deal with the inevitable problems that will arise. Obviously, I am nervous at the prospect of crippling the site through inexperience.
Any general views would be appreciated — particularly from anyone who has already made this transition from Squarespace.
Incidentally, I do have an (inactive) WordPress.com site which I set up before deciding on Squarespace all those years ago. The following post outlines some of the problems I’m currently experiencing with Squarespace.
Many thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,
Welcome to WordPress.com community :-)
There is a detailed description on how to move to WordPress.com from Squarespace available here:

This may be a good place to start.

Hi and many thanks for the link. It all sounds very simple and I suspect it IS simpler than I imagine. I’m just nervous, that’s all.
I see one problem in that “only one blog page will import”. I have three or four that are vital in preserving links. In particular, after the first few years I created a second page and made it the home page (because I changed direction from writing about technology to photography) and several years’ worth of posts are on that other main page.
Obviously, I need to look at this carefully. I am wondering if, after exporting and importing the main home page I could go back to Squarespace, change the home page and then export that second page.
Many thanks,

It’s OK to be a bit nervous, it means you will be more careful ;-)
I would suggest you create a test WordPress.com site that you can use to experiment with imports. Since your domain will still be pointing to your Squarespace site, you can’t do any real damage :-)
Try following the instructions from the guide and see what happens. It may turn out that some things will work better than expected but experience some issues you or the guide didn’t foresee.
In any case, you will have more specific questions that WordPress.com support can help you with.Good luck with your new site and feel free to ask any questions that may come up. People here love to help.
