Moving from WordPress.com to Local Installation

Hi folks,

Is it possible to export a free WordPress.com weblog and then import it to a local installation of WordPress, should I ever come to that point?

Not without a lot of agony I think. There’s a post lower down that indicates the poster knows how. Perhaps find it and post therein as well?

The only way to do this right now is through RSS or XML-RPC, but we will be adding more import/export within a few months.

Can you please explain by what means one uses RSS or XML-RPC? I’ve held off using my blog because I can’t have a local backup copy.

If that’s resolved, I’ll start using my blog.

In your options panel, you can specify the number of last N posts that are to be shown in your RSS feed. You can also set your RSS feed to display whole post rather than an excerpt/summary. Then you can just save the feed like any other XML file, that can serve as your backup. When you want to import it in your WordPress installation, just use the RSS Importer available in the package & import all your RSS backups that you made. Its simple. :)

As for doing it via XML-RPC, I’m not really sure. Maybe Matt or someone knowledgeable enough can shed some light on it.

That won’t back up comments, though, will it?

It would be nice to have a way to export all of my wordpress.com blog’s content to a local installation in the future.

I do want the same feature, i.e to export the whole blog, not just the posts., but also the comments.

Maybe using the Comments RSS feed? :)

I don’t know if that would be importable though. I kind of doubt it actually.

Could copy them over manually I would think. I moved over 200+ posts manually a few days ago in about an hour. (Even went and helped a student find a book too. :) )

well moving comments on my blog won’t be much of a problem to me, just about 100 comments in all so far, but if your blog is kinda like scoble’s, then it’ll be hell of a job with hundreds of comments!! ;)

If you were scoble, Matt would probably let you have a complete backup of your database for being so ‘special’ :(

How can I save the RSS feed, say, using Firefox (does this depend on the browser?) – I’d really like to have a backup. And to import my wordpress.com to a locally hosted wp. Thx!

Some themes don’t provide direct links to the feed so you have to do it manually:
- go to http://selbstbestimmung.wordpress.com/feed in your browser
- copy and paste the code into a text editor
- save as backup.rss. or possibly backup.xml. I’m not quite sure which. Or whether it matters.

Thanks, this worked. Actually I went to the page you indicated (…/feed) and saved it directly from the browser. It’s a pitty it won’t export commentaries (also for backup purposes).
