moving from wordpress.com to my own domain

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I would like to host ads on my blog, http://joyvictory.wordpress.com

Since I’m not allowed to do that via WordPress.com’s terms and services, I bought a private domain name today.

    I want to:

    1. Keep using WordPress software on my new domain (wordpress.org, right?)
    2. Have my entire blog (it goes back two years) show up on my new domain. Do I need to download it all to my computer or something, then FTP it up?
    3. Searches will redirect to my new domain to the correct and relevant post.

Can someone point me to the documents that explain how to do these three steps? I am not finding any clear information on how to transfer all my blog content from wordpress.com to my own domain name.

    Thanks!
    Joy

To find out how to use WordPress on a self hosted platform, please visit http://www.wordpress.ORG/support. You can export your blog using the Export feature located in the Dashboard under Manage.

As to “Searches will redirect to my new domain to the correct and relevant post.” Once you leave WordPress.com, you leave behind all the SEO features. WP.com will not redirect to your your WP.org blog, especially considering that you want to host ads. This violates TOS: http://wordpress.com/tos/ Also: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/is-redirecting-my-wordpresscom-traffic-to-wordpressorg-against-tos?replies=10

Thanks Bee! I appreciate your quick response. It’s very confusing. My blog traffic has been doing well enough that I know I have the potential to make some income from it, and that’s the only reason I want to “leave” — because it’s against the rules to potentially make money. I understand why they “ban” it but it’s a shame that good bloggers can’t help themselves and WordPress at the same time!

You could move to Blogger, they allow ads, although Blogger is vastly inferior to WordPress.

Maybe WordPress will one day offer a paid upgrade that will allow you to host ads. Personally, I appreciate ad-free, as do many other users.
