moving from wp.prg to wp.com – private domain

  I have two blogs, one with its own registered domain name (www.leatherlearn.com) and one just as a sub division of my personal web site (www.johan-potgieter.com/snow), both are hosted with PowWeb. I want to migrate them to WordPress.com and still have them under their own domain names.

  Is this possible and how do I go about it.

  (I have just spent three hours searching for this info and could find nothing …)

  You will need to purchase the Domain Mapping upgrade for both of them, and the way WP.com does this I’m not entirely sure you can have a subdomain like the second. Staff always says you can have http://whateverblog.yourdomain.com but not http://yourdomain.com/whateverblog. You should contact them from your dashboard support button and ask.

  Definitely cannot have the second one. Technically, that is a subdirectory not a subdomain and subdirectories are not allowed here.

  You understand me wrong – I am not interested in what these will be called – anything goes.

  But how do I migrate them to wp.com?

  When that is done, I would like to apply the leatherlearn.com domain name to the first one again.

  But my big panic now is to migrate them – I want to get rid of my current hosting service – they are costing me too much.

  Please help!

  Read the FAQ on exporting and importing. That’s the “how” part.

  They will end up with URLs like http://whateverblog.WORDPRESS.com but don’t worry. Once the import is complete, just purchase the domain mapping upgrade for the first and register a NEW domain name for the second (doing it via Wp is cheaper, but you can’t do it anonymously) and get the upgrade. Instructions for the domain mapping upgrade are also in the FAQ; just search on “Domain name”.

  You will want to apply the new domain names ASAP, so that all incoming links to the blog will go to your new names. Then, should you move off WP.com in future, all those links will still point to you.
