moving image blocks

  • Unknown's avatar

The most important thing for me is to be able to put image blocks on a page and move then ANYWHERE on the page. I’ve read he instructions, I’m clicking on the drag tool but it doesn’t move the block ????

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hello there,

What is the page/post you’re working on and what is the image you’re looking to move?

I’d like to replicate what you’re seeing there?

What are you experiencing when you click and drag an image?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks for your response.
I’m not sure what you mean by page/post …. I know what they are I don’t know how to identify them to you. When I click on the drag button and drag it, the button moves but when I release the button it springs back to where it was. The picture I’m trying to move doesn’t move at all in this process. The page is one I’m trying to work on to see if WordPress will do what I want. It’s not a live page yet.

    The address is https://wordpress.com/page/esotericbookshop.wordpress.com/50

  • It sounds like esotericbookshop.wordpress.com is your site.

Is this the page you are having trouble with:

    https://esotericbookshop.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=50&action=edit

And if so, which image are you trying to move and where are you trying to move it to?

Yes esotericbookshop.com.au is our site. It’s very old and the company that has been hosting it is closing down so we need to move it to a new host. To do this it seems we have to upgrade it to something more modern. It’s also a good opportunity to make it more flexible. At the moment I’m limited to where I can put text and pictures.

So on the trial wordpress site I’ve got the large picture with the person looking at a book with a smaller picture above it and an even smaller picture below it. I would like to be able to put any of these picture anywhere on the page. The only thing I can do with them is place them one above or below the other. I can’t even move the smaller pictures to the right hand side of the page. In fact, this is more limited than the site I’ve got now. I notice that the smaller pictures have a frame around them which seems to be hampering their movement to just up and down.

My current website has about 84 product pages plus a few other specialised pages. Before I start rebuilding these on a new platform or commit to a new host I want to be sure how it will work and I am able to update it the way I want..

  • Hi,

To be able to put images next to each other, you’ll have to use the Columns block.

To see what it’s possible with the WordPress Editor, please have a look at this guide:

    https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/

Also, if you’re looking to build an online store, we have a dedicated guide for that:

    https://wordpress.com/en/support/ecommerce/

In there, you’ll find information from building a small store to a really large e-commerce website.

If you have any other questions, just let me know, and I’ll be happy to help.

You’ve all been very helpful already. I shall check out the links you suggest. Thank you ….

Well I tried the columns thing and I could move them but only up and down. In fact when I tried moving them to some other part of the page I lost images under other images and can’t get them back to individual images. It seems a very clunky way to work.
There’s a page editor called Nice Page and all I have to do to move images is click and drag them to wherever I want. I’m running out of time to get my site happening before my current host shuts down his server. So I guess I’ll have to go with Nice Page.
Thanks for all the help and ideas

  • I checked Nice Page, and they have a WordPress plugin. That means you can use it here on WordPress.com. Here’s the page with the apps and plugins for all the platforms they support:

    https://nicepage.com/download

Please note that if you want to use the plugin here on WordPress.com, you’ll have to upgrade to our Business plan. This is the only plan that allows the installation of plugins.

Also, I wanted to point out that our platform is fully managed. This means that we take care of your site’s updates, maintenance, and security so that you can focus on building your site and creating content for it.

I saw they had WordPress plugins but have yet to find out what they are. I expect to go with something like the Business plan. I’m happy to pay for something that I can work with and, after all, it’s for my business so it’s to help me generate income. Okay, thanks, I shall look into this further. Also, WordPress has been around for a while and I’d prefer to go with an established company.

So, I’ve downloaded ALL the support instructions as PDFs so I can read them. I even watched the edit video.

The first thing on the page is a Heading which I can’t remove. On the first page of my website I want the heading to be a graphic of my business name and logo which has been registered as our trademark but the heading paragraph is in the way. After the first page I have product pages which also have graphic headings that I want to use.

I read through the instructions about moving blocks and columns which says they can be moved up and down or dragged. Well, they can’t. The don’t move up or down and certainly can’t be dragged. I was told I need the images in columns then I can move them ….. welll no, it don’t happen.

Thanks for all the help, it has been exemplary. It’s just that WordPress won’t do the things I want. But thanks for trying.

Hmmm, interesting. I’ve spent all day on this and I thought that just before I go and do something else I thought I’d give it one more go. Now I can’t get the preview to work and the draft won’t save …. the autosaving button just keeps oscillating between brighter and fuzzier which I guess means it’s trying to save but it’s not. Ah well …

Interesting – is this happening on that one specific post or others?
