Moving local site (AMPPS for Mac) to live site already established
-
Hi,
I am going to start work on a site off line. The site itself is already established but needs work while still remaining live. I’d like to copy the files and work with them locally on a fresh new theme. Once I get everything working and looking how it should be, I’m concerned that migrating from my computer, using AMPPS on my Mac, to the established website will be tricky because it’s already a site. I’ve looked at loads of self-help websites offering steps to take for migrating to new sites. But that doesn’t apply to me.
What files in my AMPPS files will I have to change to match the login credentials and other stuff (SALTS?) to work on the existing site?
The site itself has proven to be a huge pain in the arse for the client with all kinds of weirdo bugs in it, errors I haven’t seen before. Which is why I’d like to just kind of start fresh with the theme and stuff but keep the old data like his comments from peeps, stuff from his calendar.
I hope I’m not overthinking too much. It’s just that I want as little downtime as possible in the move, once I’m ready to move.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Cheers,

Hi,
I think only the file “wp-config.php” will change. That too just the site URL and the database credential will change. Rest everything will remain same.
You just need to pull the site from live to development (Ampps) using any FTP client and phpMyAdmin’s import/export feature.

OK that’s great. The hosting company he uses has not been responsive which got me second-guessing. Plus Backup Buddy does not work. Don’t know if it’s his theme or the hosting. But I have no problem using FTP to move the files up.
Thanks much!
