Moving my .com domain away from wordpress, com without losing authority/links
-
I started a blog in my free time for charity about a year ago. Good blogging was rewarded at WordPress – the blog was top blog for 7-8 times. Felt amazing. Bought a domain via wordpress.com and now I was ready to contribute something to charity. Surprise ! WordPress doesn’t allow any advertising. So I added a few banners here or there for donation – don’t know if Wikipedia benefited from any donations from my blog. The blog has received 325,000 hits – could have generated USD 500 – 1000 for some poor kid someehere.
I know WordPress.com is great, and I have my personal blog here still, but I want to move this blog in reference out of wordpress.com to host independently, invite guest writers and make some money for charity or otherwise..
What I want to know is how to I get my domain name out of here to install independent wordpress on it? I do not want to lose all incoming links that I’ve worked hard to generate – in other words my authority that I’ve built over time. All links from wordpress.com tags etc will go – thats fine.
For anyone who has been in this situation before – having a domain name based blog with wordpress and then moving out can really help.
Thanks very much
PS: Today, some friends suggested I change the title of my blog from “blogging for charity” to something else as I’m not making any money anyway. I think it’s time to do this.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can do one of two things. Either transfer the domain registration from here to another registrar, or you can use the domain mapping to point the domain name at the new self-hosted blog.

We can’t have ads or affiliate links but we can have buttons or small banners or links for legitimate charities to help raise money for them. Just as long as you’re not the one making the money. Unless it’s something you made yourself or if you wrote a book.

Of COURSE you can host notices and buttons and links and so on for charity: what you cannot do is host it for pay, and then say, “Trust me, I’ll donate it.” Lots of blogs here support the One campaign or various causes.

One thing I will offer when moving to .ORG, is that before you import your posts, etc. from here, go to settings > permalinks in the new dashboard and set it to “day and name”. This will match the permalink style here and is a good setting since it is SEF (search engine friendly). It also means that you will NOT end up getting 404 not found errors when someone clicks on one of your links in a search engine. Search engines do not like 404 errors.
