moving off wordpress hosting … can I leave the domain with wordpress?
-
The author of tayloronhistory.com has passed away. I am the executor of his will. I have found someone who will host his site on their server but I want to keep the domain name under my control. Currently the domain name is managed by WordPress and expires in March. Can I just keep a WordPress account just to manage the domain registration? or would I have to move to a different domain registrar?
Q1 I have removed auto renew from the hosting portion of the account … is this enough or do I have to do something active to cancel the account?
Q2 I have kept auto renew on the domain portion of the account … again is this enough to maintain WordPress as the domain registrar for this account? -
Hi there,
Firstly, I am sorry for your loss. :(
We do have a process for allowing you to gain access to that account, but we will first need you to send some supporting documentation for verification purposes. Can you please follow the steps here? https://wordpress.com/support/deceased-user/
There is an email address on that page you can send your info to directly, and from there our accounts team will reach out to you by email privately, since it is not advised to share such info here in our public forums. Hope this helps!

Thank you for your response.
The site author, knowing he was ill, gave me his login and, with that, I set myself up as an owner … so no problem with access.
The way things are right now, I set up the hosting with NO auto-renew and the domain registration WITH auto-renew with my credit card. The site has already been copied over to the new host. Can I just leave the domain registration (it renews in the new year for $18 USD) with WordPress even though I no longer use their servers? -
You’re welcome to leave the domain registered with us even if you host it somewhere else, yes. Just please make sure of the following:
1) That the email address at https://wordpress.com/me/account is one you can access – that’s where we’ll send renewal reminders, payment receipts, and also, if needed, password reset emails.
2) That the contact information for the domain at https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/tayloronhistory.com/edit-contact-info/tayloronhistory.com is yours and correct. That is where you’ll receive important communication regarding the domain registration itself.

I notice at the moment your domain is still pointed to the WordPress.com site. If you want to point it to a site at another hosting provider (or optionally transfer it away from us completely), you can find the options for that here:

I took a look at your account, and currently you still have autorenew active on both the premium plan and the domain.
You can disable autorenew on the premium plan at https://wordpress.com/me/purchases, or if you want us to do that, just reply here as
