Moving on
-
Hello, I have been a user of wordpress.com for a while and I thought of taking the next step by upgrading to wordpress.org. I have several questions:
(I want to run my website in wordpress.org moving forward)
1. Do I need to delete my wordpress.com account and focus on my new one?
2. If I delete it, can I retain/migrate my followers/subscribers to the wordpress.org?
3. Is it possible if I can just create a landing page for wordpress.com, stating that my website has moved.. or if I can create a redirect to the new website?Ofcourse, please based your answers on the FREE fix (or those not requiring fees)
I’ll wait for your answer. Thank you!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Sure, let me try and help you out:
1. Do I need to delete my wordpress.com account and focus on my new one?
No, it isn’t recommended you do this, especially if you wish to do points two and three of what you’ve listed.
2. If I delete it, can I retain/migrate my followers/subscribers to the wordpress.org?
Yes, you can migrate your followers and stats to self-hosted WordPress if you install the Jetpack plugin. Details on that can be found here, but bare in mind staff need to transfer stats: https://move.wordpress.com/move-subscribers/
3. Is it possible if I can just create a landing page for wordpress.com, stating that my website has moved.. or if I can create a redirect to the new website?
You have a few options. The most common would be:
1) The good old link to your new blog. You could set up a static page which encourages people to read your new blog. You can view the support article on doing so here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/
2) You could purchase the Site Redirect upgrade: https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/ however please note this is a paid upgrade so I’m assuming you might not be interested in it.
Let me know if you have any further questions. :)

Hello Torres126, Thank you so much for your response. Just what I need! Currently, I have set a static page to my old website in wordpress.com (kymmiereads.wordpress.com) to let my readers know I’m cooking up something on my new website. I don’t mind the SEO ranking or whatsoever for now, since I want to build it to my new website instead.
I have also asked Jetpack to migrate/move my current subscribers to the new one instead although I’m still confused since there’s no “Follow” on wordpress.org, only follow via email.
Big thanks again! ❤️

Hi!
Yep, your static page looks great, so I don’t think that’ll be too big an issue!
I have also asked Jetpack to migrate/move my current subscribers to the new one instead although I’m still confused since there’s no “Follow” on wordpress.org, only follow via email.
Please refer to this article here: https://jetpack.com/support/subscription-migration-tool/
“Keep in mind that while your email subscribers will continue to receive email notifications of new posts as before, WordPress.com followers will only see new posts in the Reader. They will not receive email updates unless they subscribe to receive those on your new site.”
Those who are currently following your WordPress.com blog will see your self-hosted blog in their reader instead. Currently, a blog doesn’t have to be hosted on WordPress.com for it to appear on a reader. You can add self-hosted blogs too if you have an RSS feed: https://wordpress.com/following/manage
The only difference is that the little “Follow” button which appears on WordPress.com blogs might not be present on a self-hosted blog. Readers might need to manually subscribe to self-hosted blogs from the previous URL.
Let us know if you have any further questions or inquiries. :)
