Moving Posts from One Category to Another (One Tab to Another)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Good morning,

I have finally been able to create new headings instead of just having Home and About Me. However, I have spent a couple of hours trying to figure out how to move certain posts to different headings, but I am at a lost. I have googled and thought I did what WordPress told me but to no avail. I have made a couple of posts be under the category of Travel Tales & Tips as well as put them under that menu but when you click on Travel Tales & Tips they don’t appear there. Please help.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

but when you click on Travel Tales & Tips they don’t appear there.

    Hi there,

The “Travel Tales & Tips” menu item leads to an empty static page at:

    https://gracealongtheroad.wordpress.com/travel-tales-tips/

You need to delete that menu item, then replace it with a menu link to the category archive page at:

    https://gracealongtheroad.wordpress.com/category/travel-tales-tips/

When adding the category menu link, please make sure that you select “Travel Tales & Tips” from under Categories in the customzier, not Pages.

A guide with screenshots can be found at:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/#step-2-add-the-category-menu-item

    I hope this helps :)

    Hi,

Thank you so much for your help. Unfortunately, I still can’t move my existing posts to different menus. I made sure to set up my menus as categories. I have followed the instructions to the video guide, the written guide and nothing. Every time I go to each menu it is empty. I feel so discouraged. I have spent all day trying to figure this out. Could there be a reason why it’s not working out for me? Is it because some of my posts are from 2014 and I just created the menus last night and today?

    Thanks.

You’ve done everything right except the last step.

When adding the menu item, please make sure that you are selecting “Travel Tales & Tips” from under the Categories heading in the customizer.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/#step-2-add-the-category-menu-item

Please note this screenshot from the documentation above:

    https://en-support.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/category-pages-2.png?w=500&h=394

See how “Soups” (highlighted in red) in that image is under the Categories heading – that’s what you need to do on your site, but for “Travel Tales & Tips”. It’s under Categories.

But I’ve done that. I have selected Travel Tales & Tips as the category and then put the posts I want as sub posts underneath but they are not showing up when I go to that menu. Could this be because the only Display Location I have is Primary Menu? When I’ve clicked that suddenly all my other menus disappear and all posts are just under my Travel one and I don’t want that. Is there a way to add my menus under the Display Location? There are no buttons under that.

Thank you so much for your patience. I’m sorry if I’m making this seem more complex. I wish there was a way that I could show you what I’m seeing. But basically, when I go to the menu on the header, I can see my category of Travel followed by the posts I want below, which I’ve indented so they can be in that menu but nothing.

I’ve tagged this thread with modlook.

A member of staff should be able to take screenshots of the customizer on your site so you can see what you need to do.

Great, thank you so much!! Is there an email address or a place I can submit my request to them?

Thanks so much for trying to help me!

  • Hi @raquelmeza1, it looks like you added a new menu as well as a new page called “categorytravel-tales-tips” — that’s probably making things more confusing.

Can I recommend making a new menu, calling it “main” or something like that, then following along with the video here?

    Menus

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you for trying to help me supernovia. However, I think I’m going to cry. I’m so frustrated with WordPress right now and I’ve always loved this site. I don’t want to have to look for another one, but seriously this is more complicated than I think it should be.

I have deleted all of my menus and then tried to add them as you suggested one by one again but now don’t show up on my site. Also, the video says that to make the menu appear on my site I will need to select a menu location. Well, I only get one option, primary and when I’ve done that in the past that one menu that I’ve chosen (i.e the Travel one) replaces all the other ones making the other ones disappear.

These are the menus I want (so far):

Home, About, Reading Rainbow, Travel Tales & Trips and Instagram Insights.

I then want to move existing posts into some of those menus. I want to click on each menu, there be a paragraph about that menu and then have the option to select to read past blog posts or new ones that I will create.

I have watched the above video you mentioned so many times today. I have tried to clean my blog so it hopefully works this time. Is there a way that I can chat with a staff member so they can help me step by step? I seriously have tried to do everything that the videos say, what people have suggested, read up on instructions. Is there another way? Can I chat with someone on the phone?

  • I think this is where you’re getting confused:

These are the menus I want (so far):

Those would typically be links within a single main menu. Does that make sense?

Also did you get to watch that video? It’s pretty short and I think it would clarify a lot. It does go fast. We can still help you. I think it’d just help make things make a lot more sense.

Also, your posts already exist in those categories here:
    https://gracealongtheroad.wordpress.com/category/reading-rainbow/
    https://gracealongtheroad.wordpress.com/category/travel-tales-tips/

You’ll just be using a menu to make links to those.

Thank you so much for trying to help me. I apologize if I’m not being very clear. I’m going to try to explain as clearly as I can so please bear with me if this is long.

As you can see my theme is Hemingway. In the live demo it shows that I can have more than just one heading (I thought these were called menus but perhaps I’m mistaken). As you will notice on my blog I have the following headings:

Home / About Me / Instagram Insights / Reading Rainbow / Travel Tales & Tips

Yes, from what I’ve read the Hemmingway theme only has one primary menu. And yes, you are correct I do have posts that are categorized under Travel Tales & Tips. My issue here is that I can’t actually see these posts when I go to the Travel page. Temporarily, I have inserted links, but his is not what I want. I want people to be able to click on Travel and see posts there.

As I mentioned in a previous message above, yes I have watched the tutorial that you posted. I have watched it multiple times, at least 10 times. I can follow along with no problem. I have also watched other tutorials that WordPress has as well as YouTubers. I understand it all. I follow the instructions but then I go over to the Travel page and the posts still are not there.

I don’t understand how if I’ve selected certain posts to be under the category of Travel they don’t appear in the Travel heading. A friend of mine who works in the IS field told me that in my URL of my Travel page there is no dash in between category and travel (i.e. category/travel…). However, when I have tried to change it and save it, it doesn’t work. It reverts back to categorytravel. I don’t think if this is where the problem lies.

I’m really not trying to be difficult. I just feel like this shouldn’t be this hard and I wish someone could follow along with me as I do what the instructions in the tutorials tell me. I still end up with an empty page every time (well right now it’s not empty as I mentioned).

I appreciate you trying to help me.

  • I totally understand. You want your travel articles to show up when someone clicks the menu link for travel articles, right?

If so, can you try these steps exactly?

    1) Go to customize > Menus

    2) Click “Add a Menu”

    3) Call it “Main”

The next step will be to click on Main and add some items to it (this is what you have called menus or headers)…

    so

    4) Add Items

    5) Click Categories

    6) Select the categories you want

Save what you’ve got! Or if you get stuck on a step, let me know which one and what happened.

  • I noticed you haven’t done this yet. Please let me know which step you are stuck on so we can help.

I do want to assure you I know exactly what you’re trying to do, and we’ve done it many times. We can help you through.

Thanks so much Supernovia for your last two messages! I’m sorry, I haven’t had a chance to try those things out as I was visiting a friend who just had brain surgery, after work yesterday. I’m at work right now so I will try this tonight or tomorrow morning as I’m traveling this evening.

I did have a co-worker who manages our IS department (Information Systems) to look at my WordPress. He knows this stuff inside and out, especially since it’s his field. I logged in for him and he too was puzzled because he saw that I had done everything right. He even tried something else that should have worked but didn’t. He was going to look into the Hemingway theme more closely and get back to me, but hasn’t yet. I was relieved to know that I was following the instructions from the tutorial correctly.

I will try what you are suggesting too either tonight or tomorrow morning. Thanks again. :)

  • Yeah I really do think it’s just a mixup of terminology, perhaps for your IT person too. Try those steps and let me know how it goes. And best wishes to your friend.

Thank you! Okay, I have followed steps you have asked! It was easy to follow. Thank you. Now, how can I get the existing posts where I talk about travel to appear in my Travel tab?

  • Ah you’ve got one more step, sorry I didn’t mention it! Go back and click on Main. Then put a check in “Primary Menu”.

You can also move those menu items around if you want to change their order, or under “Add Items” add a link to your Home page.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you so much supernovia!! It worked!! I appreciate your help! :)

Now, I’m coming across the opposite problem. How can I stop from every post appearing on my homepage? For instance, I just did an About Me post, which I want on my About Me page, but not on my homepage and it’s appearing there too. That’s the whole reason I created new categories to post things there that I don’t want appearing in homepage. I want what I write about travel to only appear on my Travel page and what I write about reading to only appear on my Reading page.

I’m starting to write for an online magazine and my blog link is on that site so I just want my blog to be functional asap. Thanks so much for your help!! :)

    @raquelmeza1,

Hi. Every post, regardless of the category or categories assigned to it, will still appear in the blog page. However, it isn’t necessary to display the blog page on the front page, or even provide a link to it in the menu. It could be replaced by a static front page.

Are there any posts that you want displayed on the front page? If so, then you could insert Display Posts Shortcode, customized to display only posts not assigned to one of the categories in your menu, into a static front page

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks so much for the help @musicdoc1! I think I was able to do a static front page. Thanks again.
