Is the site you have the XML export file from still online?

If yes, what is the URL?

Sometimes the importer gets stuck. If the file is large you may have to import Posts, Pages, etc. in separate files. Or if the file is very large Staff may have to do the import.

Thanks @timethief – It’s not a huge file, I am attempting to only import the blog posts from the last few months, as the other site is and will remain live on WP.org [ sistersthriftboutique.com ], but I would rather use WP.com for the blogging community.

The WP.com site is domain mapped on [ sistersthriftboutique.org ] to help keep them separate.

I’m not sure how to delete the posts on the self-hosted site, other than manually delete them once the export/import is successful.

Thanks for your help here. :)

Thanks for the additional information for Staff. Please be patient while waiting.

I took a look at your site and I am seeing blog posts on both sites right now:

Hi @chelseaology – those are old posts on WP.com [ SistersThriftBoutique.org ]. We stopped blogging there when we went to the new site.

Our aim is to change things back and no longer use the new site to blog. As soon as I have found a way to update WP.com with the intermittent posts, I want to delete them from the WP.org site.

Hi @chelseaology – is there anything you can do for us?

    Hello @thriftboutique,

“As soon as I have found a way to update WP.com with the intermittent posts, I want to delete them from the WP.org site.”

If you will be using the new site to blog on, and if you have performed your import to the new site on WordPress.com, I believe when you import, you will have to manually choose what posts you want to display on your blog at the WordPress.com site. Fortunately, you can do a bulk action and select all of the posts you wish to remove from your new blog site.

In the past, when I have had to do an import, I have had to manually remove the blog posts that I no longer wanted on the WordPress.com site to display. I hope I am not misunderstanding.

What I have had to do after my import is click on my Dashboard (at the top of the screen in the far upper left), then click on the Posts link in the left panel. From the posts links, select the blog posts you wish to “Move to Trash,” and do a bulk move. I have included a few helpful links.

    Helpful Links:
    Link: https://en.support.wordpress.com/deleted-posts-and-pages/
    Link: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/

Please be patient while waiting for staff feedback.

thanks for this @chelseaology – however the posts import does not seem to have worked. I cannot see them anywhere…. I think what you are describing is moving the other way: form WP.com to WP.org

We will no longer be blogging on the new WP.org site – but going back to blogging on the old WP.com if we can get this issue fixed.

The imported posts merely represent the interim period when we were trying to blog from the new site.

Do you have any suggestions for figuring out what happened to the import? Thanks!

We may have to wait for a moderator to give some input but looking at your home site, I don’t see a link to access the blog – screen shot of your site:
    Screen Shot

The blog posts look like they are there if I go to the following address so it may be a matter of adding a blog link to your homepage to access the blog pages from your home site.

I hope that we can get a modlook.

    Ok, we’ll wait for a moderator @chelseaology!

This is WP.com where I want to import the blog posts to: https://sistersthriftboutique.org/blog/
(The blog posts stopped in September when we tried the new site. This is the one we want to reactivate.)

This is WP.org which currently hosts the blog post that I will delete: https://sistersthriftboutique.com/blog/
(The blog posts were originally imported from WP.com but we no longer want the blog here.)

  • Hi there,

I checked a random sampling of the posts in your import file, and I can see all of them on your site, so to me it looks like the import was successful.

However, note that the importer won’t import a post that already exists on the target site, be it published, a draft, or even a deleted post in the trash. If you made any edits to your posts on the self-hosted site, the edited versions might not import here if older versions of the post are already on the WordPress.com site.

If there are specific posts that should have been imported but wasn’t, please let me know the publication dates and titles of two or three, then I can check for you.

Thank you for this @kokkieh – we imported fewer posts (to avoid overlap) and it worked. Much appreciate your insight. Have a great day!

  • Thanks for letting me know :)
