Moving Posts to Archive Section

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,

sorry if this has been asked already but ive searched and cannot find the answer.

How do I move a post from the main page to the archive section without deleting it.

I want it to remain to be seen in the months archive section, but not on the main blog page.

    Is this possible?

    Regards!

    john.

You can choose whether you want to display a page or your posts on the main page through Dashboard -> Settings -> Reading.
Also you can edit the maximum number of posts shown on your front page.
I hope that is what you’re looking for. :)

Also there have been quite a few threads on topics like this, search the forums.

How about we start with a link to your wordpress.COM blog? And consider linking you username to your blog as explained in the sticky at the top of the forums. Without your blog information, we don’t even know if you are hosted here.

Thanks Vivian, didnt know how to get the link onto my username, its there now, i am hosted on wordpress.com.

@lizzi i know how to get the main page to display as a page or as a post. i did not ask this but thanks.
I have also searched the forums and not found the answer im looking for.

What i want to do is move a post, which is no longer relevant as its date has past, into the archives section. Whilst keeping some other posts, which may still me relevant, on the main page.

Im sorry, Im new and i have tried.

Thanks for linking your user name to your blog.

As to your question – you don’t have to move posts to the archive – it happens automatically. Once the number of posts on your front page exceeds the number you have set in settings>reading, it is no longer on the front page.

For example – if you set your blog to display 5 posts, the sixth post is off the front page. Now I can find that post by clicking the “next page” link or looking at the month’s archives or the category archives.

I think what ashbrookridingclub means is that he/she wants to keep <i>some</i> posts on the main page while others go into the Archives?
Therefore not necessarily just the more recent posts? I’m not sure, but that’s what it sounded like from ashbrook’s post.
I don’t know the answer to this, though. vivianpaige and some others might. I was just putting in my interpretation of what you were asking. :)

Why didn’t my italicising work? :(
    (Sorry, off topic)

All you have to do to get posts off the front page is reduce the number of posts displayed on the front page (Settings->General if memory serves) or post more until you’ve pushed it off the front page.

Your italicizing didn’t work because it is not code that is allowed in this forum. Look immediately below the comment box for allowed tags.

Thanks! I knew it was one of those, but it’s been a long day.

THanks Lizi!! thats exactly what i meant…. well said!

I would like to move some recent posts to archives, but some keep older ones on visable on the main page.

Not just move them to archives purely by the order they were posted.

Hope this is possible !? Thanks already for all suggestions so far!

    Ah. Everyone just misunderstood you.

I’m not sure if this is possible, but I do know that you can change the timestamp on your posts, so maybe it can change their order. As long as you don’t mind the changing of publication time, it should be okay.

But wait for vivianpaige, raincoaster, thesacredpath, tek or some of the more experienced people to reply first. They’re better at this than me :)

The only way I can think of is by turning a category page into a sort of “home” page. But this would require a static front page, which may not do for you. Anyway, here’s the details on that:

    1. Create a “Recent” category, make it your default posts category (in Settings>Writing), and assign all already published posts to that category as well.

    2. Temporarily add the categories widget. Click “Recent” in your sidebar, copy its URL from the address bar of the browser, then remove the widget.

    3. Create a blank “Recent posts” page and make it be a link to the “Recent” category by putting this as its title:
    <a href="CATEGORY_URL_HERE">Recent posts</a>

This way you will be able to selectively remove any no-longer-relevant post by simply going to Manage>Posts and unchecking “Recent” from the categories assigned to it (and checking another category, if “Recent” was the only one).

    4. Set a static front page (in Settings > Reading). Could be your About page or another intro page. May also include the link to “Recent posts”.

That’s the part you may not like, but it’s necessary so that your front/home page won’t lead to all your latest posts instead of your selected ones.

(Of course “Recent” is just a suggestion; you could use another name instead. Only note that the name of the link in “3” won’t work unless it includes a blank space, so it has to be at least two words or one word plus one space.)

Here, I found this for you

And what panaghiotisadam said sounds complex. I guess you’d have to do that if you didn’t want to change the date of publication.
