Moving Posts to separate pages

  • Unknown's avatar

I downloaded the Port theme and I’m trying to organize things to take full advantage of it’s features. Other than the fact that I can’t really figure out how to take my existing content and just make it look like (fit into) Port’s theme, my main question is: Can I move posts I’ve already created to another page? My previous PIXEL8 blog was more or less just one continuous page of posts and now that I have a Theme that seems to organize things into separate pages (maybe?) I want to organize my previous posts by distributing them across some of my newly created pages. I still don’t really understand what I’m doing so I have no idea how Port organizes stuff or if separating posts into separate pages is going to solve my issue of trying to get my content to look like Port’s theme, but is there a way to organize my posts? I know they have different categories, but they’re already in those categories and I’m not seeing multiple options similar to Port’s theme. Should I just scrap the entire thing and start over from scratch or is there a way to organize my existing stuff within Port’s theme?

Sorry for the rambling questions, but I’ve spent the last couple of hours trying to figure this out and I’ve hit a wall. Actually I keep crashing into a bunch of walls. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi @footthumb,

If I understand correctly, you’re looking to have each section of the home page reflect a different category of post. Is that correct? Port isn’t really designed to handle that kind of layout. The different sections on the home page are more designed to showcase your portfolio, a few blog posts, and a few other items as shown here:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/port/support/

Are you only going to be having blog posts on your site (not portfolio items)? If you could give me a rundown of your ideal site, I can help you decide if Port is the right theme for you or direct you in the right direction if not!

Oops.. too late I guess, I already purchased it thinking I could just utilize it’s layout for what I wanted. I didn’t know that these Themes were so specifically content driven, I just thought they were like templates you could do with what you wanted. My bad. I suppose I could just make another site and use it for something else (maybe when I finally feel like putting a portfolio/reel together).

If you have any suggestions based on my site, that would be great. I was hoping to get something in which I could showcase some of my motion design stuff, video tutorials in Adobe software products and Cinema 4D, and of course the other half of the site is for all things Video Games (gameplay videos, reviews, random blogs, etc.). Even though it’s heavy on videos, there is a lot of writing as well. I liked the style of Port, so if you can think of anything that is along the those lines I’d greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Not too late at all! You can definitely refund that purchase if the theme ends up not being a great fit for what you’re looking for. Let’s explore a bit though!

This could work out really well! So, let’s break it down a bit:

For showcasing your motion design stuff and video tutorials, you could use a portfolio as described here:

    Create a Portfolio Website

On the theme demo, these posts would appear under “Recent Projects” (you could change that header to something else though):

    http://portthemedemo.wordpress.com/

For your blogs on gameplay videos, reviews, etc, those would appear under “From the blog” here:

    http://portthemedemo.wordpress.com/

In the middle, where it currently says “Our Services”, we could put links to other categories on your blog. So, it could read “I’m writing about” and then list three different categories.

Would that sort of layout work? If so, let me know, and I’ll be happy to help you make it happen!

(Sorry I checked out to watch the Ferguson announcement)

Sounds like it will work I just have to spend a little more time thinking through how to utilize the Theme’s features correctly (and in some cases creatively). Going forward I think everything you laid out will work perfectly but I’m still stuck with how to take the content I’ve already created and fit it into this.

Is there a way to take some of things I’ve already created and move them around this theme to put them where I need?

As of now the only way to even find anything I created is by clicking on the links in the sidebar that show up through my ‘Latest Posts’ Widget. But again, I have no idea what I’m really doing so for all I know I just haven’t explored enough of the Theme’s specific settings.

I’m going to try doing everything you mentioned and dive further into all of the Theme’s settings. I think part of the problem is I was so used to working with my previous Theme that it’s just going to take a little bit to get comfortable with all of the new settings. I really appreciate all of your help.

There isn’t a way to convert one WordPress item (like a post) into another item (like a portfolio piece). Those are two separate elements. Port uses different elements on WordPress to create the front page. This image helps to lay it out a bit:

So, in order for an item to appear in that top section, it would need to be a portfolio piece. I believe you wanted to use video tutorials and some of your motion design samples in that area. You would just need to create a portfolio on your site following the steps here:

    Create a Portfolio Website

If you have some of those items already posted as posts, you would want to copy and paste the content into a portfolio item.

The support doc covers how to setup the remaining areas on the front page:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/port/support/

Can you dig through that document and let me know if you hit any roadblocks?

That support doc is exactly what I needed. Now I understand how the Theme filters my content and how I need to label things and lay them out. My main problem was trying to figure out what to do with the content I had prior to applying the theme and it looks like I’m going to have to copy them into new posts if I want them to display properly. I’m gonna have to turn off my settings that post links to my Facebook, Tumblr, and Twitter so I don’t blast out a bunch of posts that I’ve already done, but that looks like it’s the only way to get my old posts to show up correctly. Thank you for all your help.

Not a problem! Happy to help. I love the Port theme as well. Please let me know if you have any trouble getting this setup.

So… Sorry for bugging you again, but I have another question that’s not necessarily related to the specific topic, but it’s something that’s come up in reposting some of my older stuff.

Is there a way to turn off my post count so that I’m not getting credit for reposting the same exact thing?

I feel bad that I’m getting credited with posts when all I’m doing is both reposting old posts and in some instances posting things just to see if it goes where i want it and then deleting it. I don’t want to artificially jack up my post count when all I’m doing is copying and pasting old ones.

  • Unknown's avatar

The only way to do that would be to delete the older post. Regardless of whether the content is duplicate, creating a new post will increase your post count.
