Have you installed and activated the JetPack plugin? if so then Staff can transfer your email subscribers for you. Followers using the WordPress.com Reader cannot be transferred.
-
Yes JetPack is installed.
Will subscribers receive a notification email where they have to accept to follow the blog with the new URL or is it all done behind the scene? Thanks
-
Hi again,
I flagged this thread for Staff assistance and they will answer your question when they enter this thread to move your subscribers for you. -
Will subscribers receive a notification email where they have to accept to follow the blog with the new URL or is it all done behind the scene?
Your WordPress.com followers will need to subscribe to your self–hosted blog manually.
My best suggestion is to:
- temporarily disable the Site Redirect upgrade in your WordPress.com blog dashboard (Store -> Domains),
- publish a new post on your WP.com blog asking your followers to follow your WordPress.com blog by email*, then
- re–enable the Site Redirect after a few days once you see most/all of them follow via e–mail.
* The reason for this is that they’ll be transferred to the new self–hosted site, and the subscriber move overwrites and current subscribers there, so this’ll save some hassle for them.
Before I proceed, can you double–check that your new site is working? The site isn’t loading for me.
-
Ah, your new site just loaded for me and everything checks out. :-)
Actually, regarding what I said above (#2), you can just point them to follow your new blog by email. The subscriber move will happen quickly.
Sorry for the confusion! I tend to over think this stuff sometimes.
Would you like me to proceed?

Thank you.
I can see the email followers have been transfered to the new blog.
However I can’t see the wordpress followers in the new blog and I can’t see them in the old blog either…
Am I missing something?Chris

Hi Chris,
We are able to transfer the email subscribers to your self-hosted site. However, the followers that only use the WordPress.com Reader to follow your blog doesn’t support self-hosted blogs, so non-email subscribers are not moved.
At this time, you won’t be able to access a list of your WordPress.com followers.

Hi Bryan,
I understand that the followers that only use WordPress.com reader cannot be move over, that’s fine.
But I don’t understand why we can’t access the list on the wordpress.com as the blog (https://whatifandwhynot.wordpress.com/) is technically still active…Chris

My mistake, WordPress.com subscribers are moved, but they aren’t displayed in your Jetpack–enabled blog to respect the privacy of WordPress.com users who weren’t subscribed by email.
This is our radar, but I don’t havea time frame as to when we’ll improve the process.
