Moving Subscribers and Stats from WordPress.com to Self-Hosted

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi! I feel like I’m about to have a panic attack because I just spent tons of time moving my wordpress.com site over to a self-hosted wordpress.org site and I see that I have ZERO subscribers (and I had almost 80) and close to ZERO stats (and I had great stats). Pretty please, can someone help me fix this!? I really hope there’s a way. I feel like I’ve seen other people have success in the forums, but I can’t figure out how to do it on my own. Thank you so much in advance for your help!!

I can help you with this.

I see that you connected your new site to jetpack before you moved the domain name. If you could disconnect and reconnect Jetpack, moving your stats and subscribers will go much smoother.

Let me know when that’s done, and I’ll do the next step.

Awesome, thank you for the quick response! I just disconnected and reconnected to jetpack. I’m all set for the next step. Thank you sooooo much!

This is done. Let me know if you need anything else!

Thanks! Maybe you can help me/advise me with one more thing. Since I moved things over (yesterday afternoon), I’m having a hard time logging into my new dashboard (it keeps sending me back to my old, wordpress.com dashboard). Is this just something that will take more time? Also, when I go to look at my website, sometimes it shows my new design and sometimes it still goes to my old one. How long do you think it’ll go back and forth? Thank you again!

To log into your new site, be sure to go to http://7x7xmommy.com/wp-admin. That will keep you from accidentally going to the wrong site.

As for the switching between sites, when you change where your domain is pointing, that can happen for a day or so. It will all settle down by this time tomorrow.

Thanks – the weird thing is that every single time I try the link you sent me (which is what I’ve been trying to login to), it automatically sends me to http://7x7xMommy.wordpress.com/wp-admin

Do you know why this is/how this is possible?

    Thanks!

It’s all still part of the domain name switch.

When you switch which site your domain points to the actual change happens right away, but the path between your home computer and the computer that has the updated domain information has many stops along the way. Each location has to ask the next one for the information you requested. Sometimes a computer on of those stops sees the question you are asking and, because it remembers that you asked for the same information a couple hours, or a day ago, it sends you back the answer it already “knows” instead of checking to make sure its info is still good. Most of the time this is a good thing–it makes your website load really fast, and the information is the same as the last time you looked. This shortcut backfires when you make domain changes, because the computers in the middle don’t have the new information yet.

That’s a somewhat simplified explanation, but hopefully it helps. The good news, is it only takes a day or so for all the kinks to get worked out of the system. Then you’ll be up and running like normal.

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay perfect, thanks for the explanation! :) So then I shouldn’t be too worried that it’s not going back and forth between the new and the old site? It’s solely going to the old one still…

By tonight, or tomorrow, the new site should be good to go?

Thanks again for being patient with me. Since I don’t know how it all works, it makes me nervous :) :)

That’s right. Waiting it out is ultimate solution. The link I gave you redirects to this ugly link which might help you get around the re-routing you are experiencing.

Awesome, thanks! Have a great weekend :)

    You too!

If you are still having problems on Monday let me know and we’ll dig deeper into the mysteries of DNS :)

OK perfect. And since you’re so incredibly knowledgeable, I have another question for you. My new site is loading again (yay), but the posts have strange URLs (instead of using the title of the post like it did before, it says something like http://7x7xmommy.com/?p=12481). Is that just another thing that is still updating and will take time?

  • Unknown's avatar

This is actually something you can adjust on your self-hosted site under Settings -> Permalinks. The screen should look something like this:

    http://d.pr/i/10Dum

Currently, you’re using the default setting. If you would like your previous URLs from 7x7xmommy.wordpress.com to redirect correctly, I would recommend switching to the day and name option. That matches the WordPress.com URL scheme. For example, here’s a sample WordPress.com URL:

#BecauseYouMatter :: a Mother’s Day Giveaway from Brooke Bryand Photography

Once you change your permalink structure, you’ll likely need to refresh the page a few times for it to load correctly. Can you give that a try?

  • Unknown's avatar

I don’t know what I would do without you guys! Thanks for the info! The only problem is that yet again, I can’t even login to my new dashboard without getting redirected to my old wordpress.com one…so whenever I can log back into my new dashboard, I’ll follow your directions and give it a shot!

  • Unknown's avatar

I was able to login and your suggestions worked PERFECTLY. Thank you so much!!

  • Unknown's avatar

Excellent! Let us know if you need anything else.

  • Unknown's avatar

I will absolutely do that, thank you!

I’m back with yet another question. :) My theme is supposed to be responsive and look good on my mobile version as well. I saw it look like that one time, but ever since then, it’s looked like my old, unresponsive layout. I have the “Responsive Layout” option ON…is there something else I’m supposed to do? Or will it just take time?
    Thanks!

Is this on your self-hosted site 7x7xmommy.com? If so, currently, it looks like you have the default WordPress.com mobile theme enabled. Since your theme is mobile responsive, you can disable the WordPress mobile theme under Jetpack > Jetpack from your self-hosted dashboard. Just hover over Mobile Theme and click deactivate:

    http://d.pr/i/mkRj

Then, your theme should respond correctly. Can you give that a try?
