Moving subscribers from wordpress.com to .org site

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like to transfer followers from our wordpress.com blog to our self-hosted wordpress.org site. I attempted to follow the directions and there is no “Switch Site” under the Site Picker through our wordpress.com site.

Please assist us with moving our followers to our new site.

    Many thanks,

    Ginger

  • Have you connected your new site via jetpack yet?

    http://jetpack.me/install/

I am not seeing a jetpack site associated with the WordPress.com user account you are posting from.

rootjosh, I have installed jetpack on my new site (www.outlanderpod.com). If there is a way to share a screen shot, I could show you.
In order to follow directions for transfer of followers, I have to log in to wordpress.com account, then under “My Sites” click the “switch site.” This option is simply not there.

Please advise on the next step :)

  • I am still not seeing a Jetpack connection associated with the WordPress.com user account that you are posting from.

Could you have connected Jetpack with another WordPress.com account? The original WordPress.com site and the jetpack connected site must use the same user account if we are to transfer subscribers.

Sadly, that functionality is currently broken. Staff must migrate subscribers for you at this time.

    Rootjosh,

I only have one wordpress.com account, and it’s the same name that is used for the .com and .org sites. Jetpack is installed on the .org, and I’ve signed into and done what I can w/ the .com.

Should I uninstall jetpack and then reinstall it on my .org site, and then attempt to link again w/ my .com acct? I’m honestly at a loss. I’ve done everything I can, and have been asked to do.

    Thank you,

    Ginger

That would not be a bad thing to try. I have no idea why the connection is not showing up on this end assuming everything is set up correctly on your end.

If removing it and reinstalling it does not fix the issue, I will track down someone tomorrow who can help with a deeper dive into the problem.

    rootjosh,
It appears a simply unlinking and relinking has worked! I’ve gotten much further than before.

Now I can do almost everything, except when I click “migrate” it says “only blog owners can migrate subscribers.”

Is this the point at which you can step in to transfer followers?

    Thanks!

    Ginger

  • Yup, looks like that fixed it right up. I have migrated your subscribers and followers to your new site.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

The user-facing tool for migrations is broken for the time being. This isn’t expected to be a permanent thing, but I don’t have a timeline for a fix either.

So, for the near term future, staff has to do these migrations.

Hi Rootjosh, Thanks again for transferring my subscribers. Will this also transfer the sites that I follow? When I click on an e mail received when a subscriber posts it automatically still takes me to my old .com profile, even though all my subscribers have been removed from here in stats? Any ideas? Thanks.

  • Will this also transfer the sites that I follow?

No. Sites you follow are all tied to the WordPress.com reader. There is no “reader” function for a self-hosted WordPress site.

If people are still posting to your .com site, you will still get notifications for it.
