Moving things about on site

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’m making changes and want to move posts from the categories they are currently in to new ones.
    Not sure of the work flow so would this work?

    just for example
    A = new category
    B = old category

    Create the new category A
    Move the posts from old B to new category A
    Delete empty B

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,
    If you did this, it would work fine.
    Notice that even if you deleted a category, prior to moving the posts, it wouldn’t delete the posts, only the category.
    You can also have B as a parent category and add new child categories to it.
    But yes, your way is a right way.
    Good luck!

    Transitions help keep the viewer engaged as they move from one page or section of the site to the next.

    Hello delfrag
    Thanks for your reply, I’ll give it a go then!

    I’m quite slow at doing this sort of thing and even though I have heard of them I don’t know how to make child categories. I’ll have to learn though because it answers my wondering about how to have different sections under one heading or category.
    Such as my plan to put poems into different groups (which I guess will be the children) under one category.
    best wishes

    Hello heyemjay
    Thanks for your reply, I don’t know what transitions are but I’ll look it up!
    best wishes

    To create parent categories:

    Go to your site->Posts->Categories->

    Add new category

    (Write name and description)-> Disable the switch that says

    Top Level Category

    ->Choose a parent category-> Add.

    Here’s also a guide on how to create posts and cetegories:

    https://wordpress.com/support/posts/categories/#categorize-your-posts

    Hope it helps!

    Hi Diane,
    We would simply change the category right from the admin post section by adding it. Then head over to the Categories page for SEOing the category further with the description.

    However, your case use could lead to numerous issues, and we just want to be sure you don’t mess up here. Let us first set the stage for what we really want to make sure you understand.

    What is your permalink structure set as? If not sure, go to Settings > Permalinks,
    and there you will find the answer.

    You should be using: tld.com/%category%/%postname%/

    Now, in making your CAT changes, if you’re already using the most likely proper URL structure shown above (there are exceptions of course), means you will create site hierarchy issues as related to Google’s index.

    So, upon changing your CAT’s, you will need to do one, or more, of the following.

    • Create a 301 redirect from the old post URL and connect it to the newly changed URL.

    • If the post has no real authority because your site is new, it might not matter, as Google may not have even indexed the post yet. So, in this case, you need not do anything. (check in Search Console if it’s been indexed)

    • Even if they did index it already, be it your new, and would therefore have no real authority/page rank (we believe Google still uses PR to some degree), your post will never show up in the SERP anyway, so no need to take any actions. However …

    • If that’s the case, and you want to practice proper Tech SEO fundamentals then you would want to instead of using 301 status code, create a 410 status code for the old URL which tells Google to eliminate the URL from the index.

    • Then call Google on over to the new post to get it indexed.

    It may be a while before the 410 takes effect, so you might also try the Search Console – URL Removal Tool just to make sure it gets done as fast as possible. We like doing both.

    Just thought we would chime in here about what you would call Tech SEO concerns.

    Regards,
    Daniel Lezcano BDMA CMO

    Hi Daniel and Diane,
    That’s a lot of information I didn’t even know, so thank you for that.

    What is your permalink structure set as? If not sure, go to Settings > Permalinks,
    and there you will find the answer.
    This settings are available only to Business or eCommerce plan, so I don’t think Diane will find them and her blog isn’t even published yet.
    Do you think she should still have a concern about this?

    Also Diane,
    Daniel is bringing up the subject of Google Index

    If the post has no real authority because your site is new, it might not matter, as Google may not have even indexed the post yet. So, in this case, you need not do anything. (check in Search Console if it’s been indexed)

    So if this is something you might be interested in (Appearing in Google Searches) be sure to have your site verified with this simple steps. Since it takes a while to have it indexed.

    But know that it’s not urgent nor necessary if you don’t have the intention to have people finding your posts by googling them.

    Hello Daniel,
    I appreciate the time you have taken to help me and thank you for the comprehensive answer to my question, I’m afraid most of it is way beyond my abilities at the moment but may well turn out to be very useful in the future so I will keep it in mind. best wishes

    Just adding that while Business or eCommerce plan owners occasionally post here, those plan owners usually receive direct support from WordPress.com’s Happiness Engineers when they post through the Contact Support form. These forums primarily support free WordPress.com websites. https://wordpress.com/support/help-support-options/

    Hello delfrag, thank you again for your answers, I don’t understand a lot of the new information but as I’ve said to Daniel it may become useful in the future.

    At the moment I’m only thinking about small steps and simple changes – which tells you everything there is to know about my technological abilities!

    I’m so grateful for your help, best wishes

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’m sorry I didn’t even notice your site was on wp.com CMS. lol
    My bad, but definitely indexing issues still apply, unless as delfrag said, if you’re just using it as a business card site then no big deal.

    Thanks Diane!
    We wish you the best.

    Was there anything that prompted you to send me Best Practices?
    Or you just realized I was new and wanted to be sure I saw those?
    Sometimes people don’t really say what they want to say … so I ask.
