Moving Thumbnails in a Gallery
-
I used to be able to edit a Gallery by clicking on an edit symbol which appeared in the top right hand corner, this no longer appears and I can only edit individual images. What I want to do is reorder images the way I used to be able to do, I have tried editing in IE and Chrome, same problem
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

What I want to do is reorder images the way I used to be able to do…
They’ve been tinkering with the gallery for a good part of the six years I’ve been using WordPress. The old way won’t be coming back. My favorite gallery editor was the big list page that got canned a few years back. What’s the point of shrinking it into a tiny little window surrounded by so much unused space?
I was going to suggest dragging and dropping them, but then I just did a test and realized that even that simple maneuver has become close to impossible. You move one image and four others jump and scatter all over the place.
I’ve got the latest Firefox installed.

Could you please give us a direct link to the Gallery you wish to edit, starting with http:// to make it clickable.
Yes, there have been several iterations of the Gallery in the years that I’ve been tracking it. To Edit a Gallery these days, you need to click your cursor in the Post or Page Visual Editor tab where the Gallery appears and a pencil icon will appear in the upper left corner of that. Clicking on it will take you to the Edit Gallery screen where you can rearrange the Gallery thumbnails by dragging and dropping them. Remember to update not only your Gallery, but also your Post/Page.
Note: This will only change the order of the Gallery as it appears in the Photo Carousel. It will not change the order of image Attachment pages.

Jennifer,
Here is the link: https://wgccgolfersnotices.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=7717&action=edit
There is nothing to click in the top LH corner. There used to be, which would get you through to a page with all of the pictures together that you could rearrange. Now I could only click individual images to edit just them.
Once when hovering with the Mouse, I got the image of a camera which I quickly clicked on, this got me to the gallery editing screen but I have not managed to make the camera icon appear again
Thanks
Ray

Only you and Staff can see Draft Posts and I’m not experiencing what you describe. Again, please, what published post/page are you trying to edit?
What browser do you normally use? Both Chrome and Firefox are recommended, but If IE11 (nothing before), then check that you are not running it in Compatibility mode and that Adobe Flash is up to date. There are more browser troubleshooting tips here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/
If you haven’t logged out of WPcom for a while, it might also be worthwhile to log out of WPcom and delete your browser’s cache and cookies (this will also log you out of every other site you’ve logged in to), then shut down your browser. Open your browser and then log back in.
I do see that The Powers That Be have been tinkering again and there is a new icon arrangement for editing the Gallery when in the Visual Editor tab. Rather than a pencil icon showing up in the upper left corner of the Gallery when clicked on, the pencil icon and the delete X show up in something like a comment bubble just above the Gallery. (screenshot), or on top of the Gallery area of the post in the center. However, editing the Gallery in the next screen is the same as before. Clicking on the pencil should bring you to the Edit Gallery screen.
If you’re still not able to edit your Gallery, please take a screenshot of your Gallery in the Visual Editor tab after you have clicked somewhere inside the area where the Gallery appears. Then post the link here so we can have a look. Here are instructions for making a screenshot: http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

I cannot see the icon you mention, neither using Chrome nor IE, I have the latest Flash player. I have also tried on another PC and still cannot see the gallery edit icon
The link to the page is

I have taken a screenshot using my Chrome Browser, you can see it in Dropbox link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qvxkdmjlmdd8ds1/WP%20Gallery.pdf?dl=0

Thanks for posting that very helpful information.
It looks like you have inserted the first 7 images in that Page as individual images and not as a part of a Gallery feature and then inserted the last 5 images on that page as a Gallery (they open in the Photo Carousel when clicked on).
If you scroll down a bit further in the Post Editor on that Post and then click somewhere on the last 5 images, does the pencil icon appear?
If it does, you can of course add the first 7 images to the Gallery and then remove the individual images one-by-one.

Dear Jennifer
Thank you very much for sticking with this and finding the answer. It is exactly as you said. I thought that I had been adding images to the Gallery but was actually just putting them next to it. Fixed it nowHappy New Year!
