Moving to new host but confused – wordpress site not appearing on Dreamhost

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi

Our site honeyanddates.com was hosted on Siteground. I
I want to move to dreamhost as my siteground hosting has expired and it’s too costly to renew with them.

I pointed my DNS to dreamhost so now when I go to http://www.honeyanddates.com, I’m taken to a generic WordPress account that was auto installed on Dreamhost

    My questions are:
    1) how do I get my original content to come back up when I go to honeyanddates.com
    2) I cannot seem to install any plug ins on my WordPress account as it’s asking me to upgrade the account to business and I don’t want to do that (I was able to download plugs ins a few years back for free). Dreamhost offers a migrate plug in I wanted to use.

    3) why can’t i access my site using honeyanddates.com/wp-admin? I’m assuming cuz Dreamhost doesn’t recognize that I already have a wordpress account

    4) why does honeyanddates.Wordpress.com work just fine and where is that being hosted?? I can log into this admin panel fine from there

Please help! I have been up all night reading a million articles and I can’t figure out what to do to get our site back on the new server.

    Ayesha

  • Hi there – If your goal is to more from Siteground to Dreamhost, you will not be needing a site here at WordPress.com. Instead, you will need to start a WordPress installation with Dreamhost themselves: https://www.dreamhost.com/wordpress/

Once that is established at Dreamhost, you would then need to work with Dreamhost support to get help “migrating” your existing site over to their servers. The goal here would be to effectively copy your existing site over to the new WordPress you started at Dreamhost.

Where things are getting confused, I think, is that you have started a site here at WordPress.com. Again, that shouldn’t be necessary if your goal is to be on Dreamhost. Get with their support team, let them know your goals, and they should be able to help.

If you have any issues along the way, let us know. There’s always the option of moving over to WordPress.com, if your budget allows: here’s our hosting prices.
