Moving to .org help

    Hey guys,

i have just decided to self host my blog with wordpress. I have set up an account with Blue host and managed to get my domain name on the c panel. My question is…do i need to delete my wp.com account which has the domain http://www.crackrocksmusic.com in order to use the same domain with my self hosted blog. Im not too confident with deleting my blog if im not assured that this will work fine.

    thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It appears like you have everything set up correctly at the new site and host since I can see that site just fine.

Export your content from here and import it into the new blog.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/

Then you can set the site here to private so that it does not compete with your new site in any way.

I would suggest keeping the site here so that just in case you want to reuse it later, it will be there for you. Setting it to private just sort of parks it for you. If you delete it, then that URL for that site will be gone permanently. You will not be able to get it back later if you should so wish.

thanks for your help….but it still is not working.

i set my wp.com account to private
and when i try sign into my new self hosted site with address http://www.crackrocksmusic.com/wp-admin it just redirects me to the login page for wp.com

is there something im doing wrong?

I don’t think you’ve done anything wrong or I would not be able to see your new site.

Go to settings > domains here at wordpress.com and make sure that the old wordpress.COM URL as as the “primary”? See #3 in this support document for reference.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

Also, log out of wordpress.COM, clear your browser cache and cookies and then restart your computer. Restarting your computer should flush the computer’s DNS, and clearing the browser cache and cookies should clear out anything that might be getting you back to the .COM site instead of your new one. Then try again to log into your new site.

mmm…i have tried this and it still redirects me to crackrocksmusic.wordpress.com

can i ask what it is that you see when you go to crackrocksmusic.com??

Could it be an issue with Bluehost….my domain was less than 60 days old so couldnt transfer it, instead its an ‘addon’ domain. I already changed server names on it though and i successfully did the one click installation of wordpress…

Things do take up to 72 hours to resolve in terms of changing.

As Raincoaster says, it can take a while for things to settle down. Doing a whois lookup on your domain name, the nameservers are shown as pointing at bluehost, so things are underway.

I see the wordpress installation at bluehost which has the 2011 theme and the hello world post on the main page. Basically an “out of the box” install. Your site is fine. It just might take 24 hours or so for things to settle down.
