Moving to WordPress (DNS Question)

    Hi there,

I have a specific question about DNS. I’m new to wordpress – I currently use tumblr for a blog, but wanted to expirement with wordpress and possibly move over. Any help is appreciated!

I currently have a couple of domain name, and private DNS hosting (the domain’s nameservers point to the DNS provider, and I configure the different records there). This was so I could point the A Record to Tumblr (which Tumblr supports), and other records and subdomains to Google Apps (primarily for mail).

I looked into the help on wordpress.com, and I understand I can open an premium account, and point my domain’s nameservers at wordpress (and that wordpress allows me to modify the other DNS records such as MX).

I’m not necessarily opposed to this set up, and I don’t mind paying for a premium account, but I did wonder whether wordpress allows me to continue using my private DNS server, and point the A Record at my wordpress hosted blog?

Alternatively, I could setup a redirect on my A Record (via my private DNS server) to the wordpress blog address, but it’s not quite as neat.

Hope that makes sense.. I’m not as technical as this post may otherwise suggest!!!

    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Apologies, there’s far too many spelling and grammar mistakes in that post!

Point this and redirect that – that has me a bit mixed up and most of the people that make things this fancy and complex get things very messed up.

You can map an existing URL to a WordPress.COM blog.

A bit trickier but you can use a separate email server to process the email for the mapped domain (I use my old host’s email servers for my current site on WordPress.COM)

If you are moving to WordPress.COM you should probably read the Terms of Service and types of blogs permitted as there are things you can’t do here that you can do with a WordPress.ORG install.

    @auxclass

Haha.. Maybe, but it’s worked so far with Tumblr and a few other services :-)

I don’t have any web hosting space for a .ORG install, so yes, this was for .COM.

I’ll have a look at the ToS, Thanks.

Many times when people move to WordPress.COM from other sites they ask about doing a certain technical thing and they don’t ask about the FUNCTIONALITY that they are looking for –

using an existing domain with a WordPress.COM blog is quite simple and if you sign-up for that upgrade takes you literally only a couple of minutes to compete and requires no technical knowledge at all – (well then you need to wait for the changes to work across the internet 24 to 72 hours sometimes)

Right ok… I’d still like to know if I can point the A Record without having to change the nameservers on my domain, though.

I have this question too, and as best I can tell, the answer is “no” to A Records.
