moving to wordpress.org
-
I am considering the move to wp.org. And therefore have few questions:
(1) my current site address is bezego.com. Do I get to keep it?
(2) I have bought opti theme. Can I use it on wordpress.org as well…?
(3) is there an option that I can buy the full service of transfering to a new blog? I am unable to do it myself. To be honest I do not understand anything from what I have read about moving subscribers and installin jetpacks and what not. Is there a way to do it that I do not touch anything as for sure if I do it will end up in a disaster.
(4) is there any way to receive (paid) assistane on wordpress.org or I am left alone…?Thank you for your help,
m

Yes, you do. You would use these instructions to point your domain to your new webhost:
(2) I have bought opti theme. Can I use it on wordpress.org as well…?
Premium themes are not able to be transferred or downloaded from WordPress.com.
However, you can try asking the theme author if they would be willing to provide a discount coupon or the theme files for you to download and use on your self-hosted WordPress.org site.
To contact the theme authors, please make a post in the premium theme forums:

(3) is there an option that I can buy the full service of transfering to a new blog?

(4) is there any way to receive (paid) assistane on wordpress.org or I am left alone…?
Because your new site is self-hosted with a different provider, support staff at WordPress.com do not have access to your site’s files or the ability to provide support for your current issue.
You can find support for your self-hosted WordPress site here:

Just one more question. I have many FB likes under individual articles. Will they remain when I move to wordpress.org?
-
Actually I have three more questions :)
(1) I have found in one of the links provided by you this:
“I selected custom fonts in the theme customizer. Will my fonts be transferred?
Guided Transfer is not currently available for blogs that use custom fonts. Please switch your custom fonts back to your theme’s default fonts before adding the Guided Transfer upgrade to your account.”Does it mean all my CSS coding disappears? And if it does is it possible to achieve exactly the same look (including fonts) I have now?
(2) I have an FB page – will a new blog be allowed to publish on it and update followers count?
(3) How does guided transfer look like? I honestly do not understand your instructions to move a blog on my own. So if I get similar instructions from happiness engineer the process will end in disaster :(
(4) IF it ends in disaster is it possible to come back to wordpress.com as if nothing happened?
(5) If it does not end in disaster but I discover that I prefer to be on wordpress.com – is it possible to come back with the same address, SE rankings, followers etc…?
Thank you!

As long as the URLs are the same, they should reappear once you connect your new site to FB. FB likes are controlled by FB, so WordPress doesn’t have a lot of control over them.

If you have a lot of customization, it is likely that you will need to put in some work to recreate that on your self-hosted site. Themes and customizations do not necessarily transfer. In particular, please note that premium themes purchased on WordPress.com only work on WordPress.com and cannot be transferred.
(2) I have an FB page – will a new blog be allowed to publish on it and update followers count?
As long as you connect your new site to FB, yes.
(3) How does guided transfer look like? I honestly do not understand your instructions to move a blog on my own. So if I get similar instructions from happiness engineer the process will end in disaster :(
All of the information about guided transfers can be found here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/
If you have specific questions, please feel free to ask.
(4) IF it ends in disaster is it possible to come back to wordpress.com as if nothing happened?
Yes. Nothing is destroyed on the WordPress.com side of things (unless you choose to delete your site).
(5) If it does not end in disaster but I discover that I prefer to be on wordpress.com – is it possible to come back with the same address, SE rankings, followers etc…?
Yes.

Thank you :)
Concerning FB likes – how do I ensure that the URLs stay the same? Is keeping the blog address enough…? Also since I want to keep the same address – do I need to purchase the redirect service…?
About css – I understand I need to write the css from the beginning. But is it enough to copy and paste? Or do I need entirely different coding? Does guided transfer cover making sure my new site looks exactly the same as the current one?
I do not understand how the guided transfer proceeds. Do I get access to chat or just a text with instructions I need to follow? What happens when I do not understand what I need to do…?
It is a relief to know I can come back :) Thank you.

You need to make sure that you set your post URL structure up the same way that they were on WordPress.com.
Also since I want to keep the same address – do I need to purchase the redirect service…?
You do not. Because you are already using a custom domain registered with WordPress.com, any traffic to your old site will be redirected to your new site.
About css – I understand I need to write the css from the beginning. But is it enough to copy and paste? Or do I need entirely different coding?
It is usually more work than that. You will need to edit your theme files.
Does guided transfer cover making sure my new site looks exactly the same as the current one?
No, it does not.

Log into your WordPress.com site’s dashboard and go to “store” then scroll down and look for “guided transfer”. As you are using a premium theme, you will not be able to select it until you follow the instructions you will see there and switch to another theme.
If I may ask, why are you interested in switching to a self-hosted site? It seems like it will be a rather daunting task for you. Are you sure that it’s worth the trouble?
-
Yes, you may :) It IS a dauntig task and I AM stressed about it. But I really do need a good autoresponder, which WP.com is unable to provide me with. So if you have an idea how to do that, I will be grateful :)
Sorry, I still do not understand how the guided transfer proceeds. I asked about the nature of contact with happiness engineer and his role in the process. :)
Thank you!

After you purchase Guided Transfer, there will be a new area in your dashboard (Store–> Guided Transfer) that will have instructions. The Guided Transfer team will also email you. You can email them back for support or with questions if you are confused.
But I really do need a good autoresponder,
Can you explain a bit more? What are you trying to autorespond to?
-
Thank you. I need aweber which does not operate with wordpress.com and I also need more flexibility with follow me widget :) But I was asking so many questions only to find out whether I need help of professional designer or not. It turns out I do :) So I will just hire someone.
I guess my last question is this: I have found info that the process of moving to wp.org will be transparent to my readers. What does it actually mean? Since as you said – I need to move to a free theme – obviously my blog will not look as I want it to look. So is there some info for my readers that the blog is under maintenace works or sth like that…?
Thank you!

When you say hire someone, are you meaning the Guided Transfer upgrade? Or are you saying that you are going to hire a professional WordPress designer to set up your new self-hosted site?
-
The question you have quoted concerns guided transfer :) I want to hire someone AFTER the transfer.
-
If I were doing this, I would just hire someone and not bother with the Guided Transfer. Any WordPress Professional worth anything will be able to do the same thing that the Guided Transfer does.
I would ask the WP person to get the new site all set up and then the last thing I would do would be to switch your domain from pointing to your old WordPress.com site to the new self hosted site. This way, your readers will see virtually zero “transition”.
-
Yes. Thank you. Unfortunately, I am reluctant to give anyone my password.
The guided transfer idea came to me when I read timethief’s blog. It was written there:
“Guided Transfer: For the Technophobic
For $129, a WordPress.com Happiness Engineer will install WordPress software at one of their recommended hosts, transfer your blog, and provide additional support for a two-week period. (…) Happily, the staff at WordPress.com will transfer your current subscribers from your WordPress.com blog to your new self-hosted site if you install the Jetpack Plugin by WordPress.com first.”
So it looked like happiness engineers do it, not me. Now, from what you have said it is not true. So was timethief wrong? Why would she put this info on her blog…? This is why I asked about the nature of the contact with the happiness engineers as what you said about guided transfer was that it is basically do-it-yourself prompted by dashboard. Or am I completely wrong?
Also From wordpress page on guided transfer:
“What does the Guided Transfer include?
Installing the WordPress software at the recommended host of your choice.
Transferring over your entire WordPress.com site.
Installing and configuring Jetpack and a few other plugins to provide features that you have been using on WordPress.com.
Configuring and testing permissions so that you’ll be able to have one-click installs and upgrades.
Switching your domain(s) nameserver settings to point over to the new site.
Answering questions and providing guidance for you on your new WordPress installation for a two week period.”So switching domains and testing permissions is included – and I cannot imagine it is just a set of instructions popping on my screen.
So I would be very grateful if you could explain how the guided transfer proceeds, what is my role in it and what is the role of happiness engineers? (Basically my first question about guided transfer) It seems to me that dashboard guided export of files is only a tiny element of it. And the rest is done by happiness engineers not me…?
-
The Happiness Engineer does the transfer for you. They do everything listed in your previous post. Aside from getting your existing site ready to go (switching from your premium theme to a free one, etc), you can pretty much leave it all to them.
But there is a limit to what the transfer includes. It does not include setting up any premium themes or custom CSS. You indicated that there was some amount of customization in your existing site. As you were already talking about hiring an outside person to help you and were concerned about your viewers during the transition, I spelled out the method that would involve the least amount of disruption for your viewers.
-
Thank you for your concern and advices but at the moment I am keen to know the facts that have an impact on my decision.
So just to make sure: in guided transfer all I need to do is switch to a free theme and give the name of my new hosting company…?
Also what does the guided transfer mean for my viewers then? Will there be a long disruption…? Your guide said the process will be transparent so I have assumed that there will be a slight disruption and a notice about its reasons? Thank you for raising this topic!
-

Yes.
Will there be a long disruption…?
Your viewers will see either your old site or your new site the whole time. The only disruption might be graphically if you decide that you need to work on theme, CSS, or plugin customizations that are not covered by the GT process. But even then, your site content will be there for your users to see. They just might not be looking at it in its final design presentation.
