Moving to WordPress.org
-
Hi,
I am considering moving my blog to WP.org so I can incorporate a shopping cart. I understand that all my followers can be transferred over, but the community is important to me, and I still want my posts to appear in the WP.com reader.
Can you advise if this is possible? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Your posts will appear for your followers on their WP.com reader. But they will not appear under general tag/topic/category searches.
Is that what you were asking?

So am I right in thinking if I am to move to WP.org all the posts I write from there on will still appear in the WP.com reader automatically?

Only to your existing WordPress.com followers.
You will also need to connect your self hosted site to Jetpack and then request to have your existing followers migrated to the new site.

Ok, thanks but what happens with new visitors/followers? Does that mean that new people wouldn’t be able to find me?
I guess my other option would be to upgrade to the business plan which allows a shopping cart, but am I right in thinking restrictions are still in place, such as plugins and JavaScript?
Thank you

They would find you the same way that anyone finds a website. Through search engines, social media promotion and so on. The WordPress.com tag/topic search only works for WordPress.com sites. It does not work for self-hosted WordPress sites. There are advantages to each platform (self-hosted and .com), you will need to decide which advantages are more important to your overall site plans.

Correct. Javascript and plugins are not available on WordPress.com. Purchasing the Business upgrade wouldn’t change that.
It really does sound like a self-hosted WordPress site is what you are looking for. WordPress.com is great, but it won’t serve everyone’s needs perfectly.

Thanks for your advice, I think what id like to do is get a couple of months hosting, and try it out.
it would mean having a duplicate site for a while, Is it ok to do that whilst still keeping my.com as it is? -
In general, there is no problem with that. Over the long term, your site’s SEO can be hurt by having exact duplicate content on another site.
