Multi-author sites and deleted user accounts

    Howdy!

    Now that users can choose to completely delete their WordPress.com account, what then happens to posts that the user created on a multi-author site?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Jennifer,

    Those posts are not removed from the site, just like leaving a blog where you’re not the owner won’t remove any content you created on that site.

    If someone wants their content to be removed from a site where they contributed, they either need to remove it themselves before they delete their account, or contact an admin on the site directly to request that.

    OK, thanks @kokkieh. I’m playing the role of Devil’s Advocate here. Thanks for understanding.

    So there are now two known instances when users who choose to close their WordPress.com account leave content behind:
    1. Comments they’ve left on other websites;
    2. Posts they’ve written on a multi-author blog
    (and probably others, such as 3. forum posts)

    Other than contacting a site owner for removal of the first two types of content, which is no guarantee that the site owner is available or will do so, will there be any tool coming for users to remove it directly themselves? If not, can a user request WordPress.com to remove such content? If so, how?

    (In light of certain data privacy regulations recently enacted, it might be worth noting something in the close account support guide.)

    We do not control content submitted by visitors or contributors to sites owned by other WordPress.com users, and as hosting provider we are not responsible for that content, the site owner is.

    We cannot comment on what legal obligations site owners might or might not have to delete such content if requested, but we have never allowed commenters to remove their own comments form sites they don’t own, or for contributors to remove content from sites where they don’t have the required user level to do so, and we have no plans to change that.

    If you want to know whether or not you have an obligation to remove the content of comments or posts made by visitors or other users on your site at their request under the new legislation, we recommend that you consult an attorney.

    As this was a general question and not specific to my activities, thank you for the information.
