    Hello,

I see that I can assign different “roles” to guest authors IF they have a wordpress account (admin, editor, author, contributor, etc). But what if they don’t? Is there any way to identify them in the byline? Otherwise, I can just add a statement at the beginning of the post, naming them.

Same would go for multi-authors post…?

I just want to be clear on what my options are!
    Thanks!
    C.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    No there isn’t.

Otherwise, I can just add a statement at the beginning of the post, naming them.

True you can do that but they cannot post directly to your blog without registering a username account at wordpress.com and you assigning them a user role. https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/

    Yes.

It takes only an email address to register an account here, and there is no theme that will display more than one author per post automatically.

I’m ok with not having them post directly to my blog. I prefer to do it myself for now. I just want to make sure that it’s ok for me to post articles (which I would review) from authors who don’t have an account?
I understand that I won’t be able to add them to the byline unless they are registered and I’ve assigned roles fro them.

If they do have to register for me to even post their articles, will they need to pick a blog template when registering? I can’t remember the steps I did when I registered bcs I picked a template right away….

Thanks, I just really want to be clear on this before I move forth!
    C.

I’m ok with not having them post directly to my blog.

We are on the same page. I do not allow access to my blog to anyone except my co-Admin and he’s on Staff … lol :D.

They only need to register a username account. They do not need to register a blog so the template (theme) question is not relevant.

Some themes are designed to display author bylines and some are not. In reference to those themes that do display author bylines there must be at least two official authors who have both published a post in the blog for the author bylines to display.

You can have either a public or a private WordPress.COM hosted blog and there is no limitation on the total number of contributors to any blog. If you’d like to invite others to publish posts or help approve comments on your blog, you can invite them to be a Contributor, Editor, or Author. If you want users to receive updates each time you publish new content you can invite them to be a follower/viewer.

To change blog visibility to Private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3. See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings

    See here please:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/
    and here http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#author

The person will have to register a username account which requires an email address only, but does not need to register a blog. That requirement is because the software has to be able to differentiate between hackers and official users and allow access only to those with username accounts and official roles on the blog.

Upon receipt of the invitation the invitee will need to click the “Accept Invitation” button in the invitation email. If the invitee is logged into their WordPress.com username account, he or she will be taken directly to your blog. If not, he or she will be taken to the log-in screen, where he or she can either log in, or can register a new WordPress.COM user account.

Note that invitees who do create a new WordPress.com account at that point will still need to return to the invitation email and click the “Accept Invitation” button after doing so.

Lastly, there is a built-in spammer prevention so send out only 10 invitations at one point in time and then wait and manage those before sending out 10 more.

Thank you for all the info!

    One last clarification –
I would prefer not to ask my guest authors to register at all, post the article myself and just add their name to the article per se (and not have them listed in the byline). Can I do that?

If it’s violation of wordpress, I’ll go the route you’ve clearly explained for me above.

    Merci:)
    C.

Yes, you can get them to email the post to you. Then you publish it yourself by adding their name as a guest author on the first sentence in the post below the post title.

    Thanks for the reply!
That’s perfect – I can discuss both options with them. If they really want to appear in the byline, they can register; if not, they’ll get a note in the post.

Hope that you’re having a great weekend:)
