Multi territory/language using Subdirectories on a single ‘.com’ website

    Hi there,

We’re a B2B Streaming service looking to migrate to wordpress.com to host and build our website.

We’re looking to internationalise our site with the use of Subdirectories under our ‘master’ .com domain (exactly the same as the wordpress.com website):

    E.g.:
    https://wordpress.com/es/pricing/
    https://wordpress.com/it/pricing/

We will require the same ‘theme’ and layout for every market proposition, however, the actual product in each market will vary (e.g. the content we have available to customers in Spain vs UK is different) and so we need different pages (not only a different language).

The plan is to geo-locate the visitors IP to load the correct, localised pages. However, what I don’t know is, how exactly are subdirectories implemented on a WordPress (.com) site?

Can I do this on woredpress.com? Are different market pages (e.g. company.com/es) made as individual sites, or are they variations within the same site?

Hope to hear back how this is done, any videos, guides or info would be super helpful!

    Thanks,
    Oli

  • Hi Oli,

Do you want multiple sites, or do you want a single site?

If you want multiple sites, each at their own subdirectory, then WordPress.com is not the right hosting provider for you, as we don’t support hosting sites at subdirectories, only at subdomains (and each site would need to be on its own paid plan to have it at its own subdomain.)

If you want one site, then what you want is possible using the right plugins. You can use plugins on our Business Plan, but I’m not able to advise you on which plugins to use – the only one that might fit in here that I’m familiar with is Polylang, which is specifically used to show multiple language versions of a site. Though I’m not sure if works via geotargeting, and you’ll probably need something else in addition to it to filter content based on location as well.

A quick Google search took me to https://www.wpexplorer.com/wordpress-geotargeting-plugins/ which covers a number of options that might work for you, so you can look at those. You can also ask the WordPress.org community, who makes the WordPress software itself and plugins for that software, for advice at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

If you find a plugin that looks promising, it’s best to contact the company that makes that plugin directly for any questions on its specific features and how it works.

However, what I don’t know is, how exactly are subdirectories implemented on a WordPress (.com) site?

Simply put, subdirectories are created whenever you publish a page on the site. So the page title automatically becomes the subdirectory. You can also create second-level subdirectories by assigning pages a parent-child hierarchy. Some plugins can also influence the directory structure, for example Polylang which would add a country/language code subdirectory.

We will require the same ‘theme’ and layout for every market proposition

If all your pages are on the same site, they will have the same theme – it’s not possible to have more than one theme active on a site at the same time. Layout is controlled in the page editor, so if you want the same layout on multiple pages, you just create a template and copy it onto each page.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
