multiple blogs on same account

I registered for an account and set up my first blog but was wondering if I could use blogging as part of my teaching approach – I teach at university
what I would like is to set up a separate blog on my account that my students could add too and post to etc – is this possible and if so how would I do it – do I need to give the students editing privileges

It’s possible to have multiple blogs/websites on the same account.
As for giving your students admin access, that’s totally up to you.
Your students could comment as guests, but if you want them to be able to edit the structural parts of the website, like changing themes, editing the menu and so forth, then they would need admin permission.Your students could also consider setting up their own WordPress sites in WordPress.com. However, if you need to have one place where everyone is able to contribute or comment, almost like having your own private network, I’d recommend you look at the P2 theme which comes prebuilt with such features prebuilt.

It’s best not to have more than one Admin but you can add people as editors, authors etc: https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/
