Multiple Blogs Single Site | Setup Ideas/Opinions?
-
I want to setup a personal website, I own the Domain already, and I bought a WP theme.
But my organization is going to be complicated given the goal of the website is severalfold, so I’m hoping someone can help me with organization ideas.
1. I want there to be a ‘landing page’ which will contain information about me, a personal journal blog, perhaps Twitter/social media type integration.
2. I also however want to maintain a separate blog about a very specific business topic which relates to my involvement in investing.
3. I know one suggestion is to simply separate the two (indeed, I’m not 100% sure I want people reading both), and keep two separate blogs and link one to the other.
4. On the other hand, I think that it’s necessary to read both to get a good idea of ‘who’ I am and why my investment ideas might be relevant, hence I think the personal blog is relevant to my more serious one. Further, I would like them to share one domain so I can simply share one website.
5. If that’s the case, how can I go about integrating TWO separate blogs on the same site? I know I can use categories and tags, but I really want them to be separate and distinct.
6. Many news sites have this type of system, where for instance an economist for the New York Times writes a syndicated column/blog every week, but the Times also hosts his own personal ‘thoughts’ blog on the same site. I essentially want to have two blogs with two alteregos, and can’t figure out how to set this up without making a mess.
7. I’ve also considered that the ‘personal’ blog could be leveraged through a different blog system like Tumblr and then displayed on the main page, and then use WP to power the second blog. But again, I don’t want a mess.
Any ideas out there?

A static front page may serve as a landing page, with information about you, about the site, links, etc., but you’ll have to choose between a posts page and a static page as the front page. However, some themes include various sections for featured posts, recent posts, etc. on a special static page template, which may be used on a static front page.
4. ….Further, I would like them to share one domain so I can simply share one website.
5. If that’s the case, how can I go about integrating TWO separate blogs on the same site?WordPress.com sites have the potential for only one blog or posts stream. So the answer to your question is that there is no way to have two separate blogs on the same site.

You can definitely have multiple authors on a single website, and all of them could be pseudonyms for you. However, in order to do so you’ll need a separate account (each with a separate email address) for each “alter ego.” The site owner/original administrator may then invite others to be contributors, assigning them User Roles.

Hello – thank you for your detailed and quantized response!
1. I think I take your point about WP not allowing multiple blogs per website, though seemingly one can use categories to split the content into separate ‘sections’ by menu (which could then ostensibly be linked to, or even redirected to by a another domain name, thus bringing the user to one or the other directly (even though they’d be on the same site)).
This video accomplishes that. I’m not sure – how is this different from having ‘two blogs’ on the same site? What would that look like? I think, essentially, this is all I want. But I’m wondering if you were implying there’s a different way to do this?
2. As far as integrating other platforms, say Tumblr or Medium, I assume it’s NOT possible to integrate them WITHOUT using WPs ‘blogroll’ (which would mean there’s still only 1 blog on the site).
Unless, there IS a way to SEPARATELY integrate some other blog/posting platform (even Google+ for instance) OUTSIDE of WP’s blog functionality?

Yes, categories may be used to separate groups of related posts from other groups on the same site. However, if you have a menu item linking to a different domain name, the visitor clicking on it will be taken to a different website. Of course, with tabs one can easily remain on multiple sites at one time. Each post and page on a WordPress.com site must contain the same domain name.

I skipped item #7 in the OP because I have no answer for it. What you mean by leveraging a blog through a different blog system or integrating a WordPress.com blog with another blogging platform is unclear to me. Have no idea if it can be done, or if so how.
